The bags have bagged a lot of attention. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra carried one to Parliament on the first day, with “Palestine” inscribed on it alongside a watermelon, a widely recognised symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, which created an uproar with the Bharatiya Janata Party terming it “communal posturing” and asking why her heart does not bleed for Hindus in Bangladesh.

As if on cue, the next day, Priyanka, along with other party MPs, protested while carrying cream-coloured cloth bags, espousing support for minorities—Hindus and Christians—of Bangladesh.

But where are these not-so-designer bags from? The Palestine one is from her personal collection. Sources say she got it when she met the Palestinian Chargé d’Affaires at her home.

Palestine Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Dr Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer met Priyanka to congratulate her on becoming an MP. The Congress leader told him that she had always supported their cause and she would carry the message to Parliament as well, which she did with the tote bag from her personal collection.

But it’s the cream-coloured cloth bags she and her party MPs carried that grabbed attention. With a colourful fist embroidered on it in the colours of Bangladesh, it spoke of support for Hindus and Christians there after being targets of attack.

Sources say the bags were ordered and prepared almost overnight for party MPs at the textile hub, Tirupur, in Tamil Nadu. The party wanted a quick supply of these bags, which were promptly delivered.

Not just this. Sources say that Tirupur is also the place where many of the campaign materials of the Congress, like during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, were sourced from.

Kanyakumari MP Vijay Vasanth has in the past provided vendors in Tirupur for such party materials, but this one was sourced in a hurry through someone else.

A stickler for perfection in clothes and perception, the first-time MP has tried to score a point with the bags.
