Indian-origin lawyer Harmeet K Dhillon, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as Assistant Attorney General in his new administration, has joined the ongoing debate over the spelling of Punjab.

The issue sparked widespread discussion after Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s recent post on X, where he wrote “Panjab” instead of the conventional “Punjab.”

In her post on X Tuesday, Dhillon shared the same spelling “Pnjab”, reigniting the debate over whether the alternative spelling has political or cultural significance.

The controversy began after Diljit Dosanjh, while announcing his Chandigarh concert, used the term “Panjab”. The spelling is commonly used in Pakistan to refer to the region, which led many Indian netizens to question the singer’s choice.

“Tomorrow CHANDIGARH PANJAB 🇮🇳 Dhool Kitni Bhi Uchi Chali Jaye Kabhi Aasman Ko Ganda Nhi Kar Sakti,” Dosanjh shared in an X post on December 13.

Social media users also criticised Dosanjh for not using the tricolour emoji, as he usually does in his Indian concert announcements. Some speculated that his use of “Panjab” was a deliberate attempt to distance himself from India.

In response to the backlash, Dosanjh issued a statement on X, labelling the uproar as an unwarranted conspiracy. He explained that he had missed the India flag emoji in a previous post, clarifying that whether it’s written as “Panjab” or “Punjab”, the region remains the same.

“PANJAB, kisi Ek tweet mein agar PANJAB ke saath India flag mention reh Gaya toh conspiracy. Bengaluru ke tweet mein bhi ek jagah reh Gaya tha mention karna Agar Punjab ko PANJAB likha toh conspiracy. PANJAB ko chaahe PUNJAB likho PANJAB WILL BE PANJAB (If I forgot to mention the India flag with Panjab in one tweet, then you create a conspiracy. I missed mentioning it even in a Bengaluru tweet. If I write Punjab as Panjab, then conspiracy),” the singer had clarified in another post on December 16.
