A crew member and a passenger on an Air India flight from Dubai were arrested at the Chennai airport on Sunday on charges of attempting to smuggle gold outside the airport. According to a report with The Times Of India, the crew member had received gold from the passenger.

Both the accused were arrested by customs officials, who did not reveal their names.

Both were arrested as soon as the flight landed in Chennai and according to the report, the crew member was found hiding the gold in paste form.

A tip-off in this regard was earlier received by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

On being confronted, the crew member said the gold, which weighed 1.7 kg and was worth more than 1 crore, was handed over to him by a passenger.

“The modus operandi was that the passenger will hand over the gold to the crew member on the flight, and the latter was supposed to deliver it to a receiver outside the airport,” the report quoted a customs official as saying.

Further investigations into the case were underway.
