Ashwin’s story from kidnapping to pink-ball test: Used to open in the school team, the coach made him an off-spinner; now retired

Experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from international cricket on Wednesday. He suddenly announced his retirement after the Gabba Test draw between India and Australia. Ashwin played his last international match with pink ball in Adelaide.

38 year old Ashwin has 765 wickets in his name in 287 matches. He is India’s second highest wicket taker bowler. Ahead of him is only Anil Kumble, who has taken 953 wickets.

Earlier he used to open, became a spinner on the advice of the coach. When Ashwin started playing cricket, he was an opening batsman and used to bowl medium pace. His school team coach CK Vijayakumar transformed him from an opener and medium pacer to an off-spinner.

Vijay Kumar told in an interview to Sportstar that he was bowling medium pace in the nets. When he got tired, he came and asked, can I make him off-spin? I agreed to this. The next day, Ashwin asked the coach to bowl medium pace, but the coach refused. Explaining the reason behind this, Ashwin says-

When I saw him, it was clear he was different. He was making good use of his height, getting extra bounce and pace off the pitch. He was also a quick learner compared to others in his age group.

Players of the opposing team kidnapped before the match Ravichandran Ashwin was once kidnapped. He was kidnapped by players from the rival team before a tennis ball match. Ashwin himself had mentioned this in an interview. He had said- ‘4-5 fans and members of the other team came from Royal Enfield and took him along on the pretext of picking him. Ashwin told that his only motive was that I should not play the match.

Ashwin was dropped in 2017 Ashwin was dropped from the Indian team in 2017. He made a comeback in the Indian team before the 2021 T20 World Cup. It took him four years to make a comeback. Later he was also selected in the 2022 T20 World Cup team.
