‘My Resignation Won’t Help’: Amit Shah Says Congress Will Be In Opposition For Next 15 Years – News18

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said his resignation, demanded by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and other opposition leaders, would not solve the problems the Grand Old Party was facing
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday took a swipe at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge saying, given his background, he should not have supported his party’s “nefarious effort” in the Ambedkar controversy.
Shah held a press conference to respond to the opposition’s attacks on him amid a massive row triggered over his alleged insult of Dr BR Ambedkar. He said his resignation, demanded by Kharge and other opposition leaders, would not solve the problems the Congress was facing.
“Kam se kam 15 saal tak aapko wahin baithna hai, mere resignation se inki koi dal nahi galegi. If my resignation makes Kharge ji happy, I can give but this won’t solve his troubles; he has to remain in opposition for 15 more years,” he said.
He said, given his background, the Congress chief should not have supported his party’s move to “distort facts” but, “regrettably”, he had caved in under “pressure” from Rahul Gandhi.
He added: “I want to say this to…Mallikarjun Kharge that you should not have supported this nefarious effort of the Congress. I am very sad that you (Kharge) have also joined this under the pressure of Rahul Gandhi.”
WHAT DID MALLIKARJUN KHARGE SAY?
Stepping up his attack on Amit Shah over his remarks on Ambedkar, Kharge said if Prime Minister Narendra Modi has any respect for Babasaheb he should sack the home minister in case he does not quit on his own.
Accusing Shah of disrespecting the architect of the Constitution, Kharge said the home minister should apologise to the nation for the insult he caused to Ambedkar during his speech in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (December 17).
“I want to tell the PM that if he respects Babasaheb, he should immediately remove Amit Shah from his cabinet,” he said during a press conference. “Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar are condemnable, he has insulted the Dalit hero, whom they consider as revered. Amit Shah must apologise to the people of the country.”
He further attacked the prime minister, saying instead of telling Shah that his remarks were wrong, Modi is defending his home minister. He added that an MP or a minister takes the pledge of the Constitution, and if he disrespects it, he should be removed from the cabinet immediately.
WHAT IS THE CONTROVERSY?
Criticising the Congress for repeatedly taking the name of Ambedkar, Shah in his remarks, during a speech on the debate on the 75 years of the Constitution, said they had taken God’s name so many times they could have earned a place in heaven.
“Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven),” he said.
Shah further said the BJP is happy that the Congress is taking Ambedkar’s name but the party should also speak about its real sentiments towards him. He pointed out how he had to resign from the first cabinet citing his disagreement with the then Congress-led government’s policies, including Article 370.
He also said most of the memorials of Ambedkar were built when the BJP came to power. “How appropriate is it for you to use the name of a person for vote bank politics whom you used to oppose?” he asked Kharge, who is the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
