Aamir Khan-backed Laapataa Ladies was not shortlisted for Oscars 2025 consideration. The film was India’s official submission for Best International Feature Film.
Laapataa Ladies’ Oscar 2025 run has come to an end. The Kiran Rao film was India’s official entry to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category. However, it was not shortlisted for the final round. Although Kiran Rao, producer Aamir Khan and the cast of the film are yet to comment on the shocking turn of events, the film’s actor Ravi Kishan returned to X and shared a new post.
For the unversed, Ravi Kishan played the role of police officer Shyam Manohar in the film. Although Ravi has not reacted to Laapataa Ladies’ Oscar exit, he shared a post to pay tribute to Sant Shiromani Baba Guru Ghasidas Ji. He wrote, “Tribute to Sant Shiromani Baba Guru Ghasidas Ji, the founder of Satnami sect, the messenger of love and humanity, who raised public awareness against social evils and discrimination, on his birth anniversary.
His teachings will always be beneficial and well-being of humanity.”

#GuruGhasidas pic.twitter.com/DHRv2J0jEL— Ravi Kishan (@ravikishann) December 18, 2024
Meanwhile, Ricky Kej and Hansal Mehta slammed the Film Federation of India for submitting a film that they felt wasn’t a good fit for the Oscar run. “#LaapataaLadies is a very well made, entertaining movie (I enjoyed it), but was absolutely the wrong choice to represent India for the best #InternationalFeatureFilm category. As expected, it lost. When are we going to realize.. year after year.. we are choosing the wrong films. There are so many excellent movies made, and we should be winning the #InternationalFeatureFilm category every year!” Ricky said.
“Unfortunately we live in a ‘Mainstream Bollywood’ bubble, where we cannot look beyond films that we ourselves find entertaining. Instead we should just look for good films made by film-makers who are uncompromising in their art.. low budget or big budget.. star or no star.. just great artistic cinema. Below is the poster of #LaapataaLadies, I am sure most academy voting members dismissed the film just by looking at these,” he added.
Hansal mocked FFI by saying, “Film Federation of India does it again! Their strike rate and selection of films year after year is impeccable.”
While Laapataa Ladies lost out on the Oscar opportunity, Santosh, a Hindi-language film from the United Kingdom, made it to the shortlist.
