Arjun Kapoor opened up about the criticism and negativity he has faced throughout his career, revealing that many wanted him to fail.
Arjun Kapoor recently shared insights about the challenges and negativity he has faced since his debut in 2012 with Ishaqzaade. Speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Figuring Out, the actor reflected on his struggles, criticism, and the immense pressure of being in the spotlight. He candidly stated that there were people who wanted him to fail.
When asked about the pressure of starring in Singham Again alongside big names like Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh, Arjun expressed his gratitude for being recognized in the film. He said, “I felt very happy when Rohit sir told me that people were now talking about me and recognising my ownership of the film. It was a graceful moment because, for a long time, people wanted me to fail. By people, I mean those who are slightly critical, clickbaity, and prone to trolling—they saw me as an easy target.”
Arjun acknowledged that much of the criticism he received stemmed from his surname, personal life, and a few box office failures. “The perception was that I didn’t like working, didn’t care about my work, wasn’t interested in improving, and didn’t deserve to be an actor. This sentiment was amplified by the physical struggles I faced during a significant period in my career, which stemmed from health issues I only recently spoke about. I understood how this narrative made it easy for people to throw darts at me,” he added.
The actor also addressed how a particularly harsh review of his film Kuttey left him feeling personally attacked. “I respect reviews, but I don’t respect personal attacks,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of separating constructive criticism from unwarranted negativity.
The last few years have been challenging for Arjun, with films like Sardar Ka Grandson, Bhoot Police (2021), Ek Villain Returns (2022), and Kuttey (2023) receiving mixed or lukewarm responses. However, his role as the villainous Danger Lanka in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again marked a turning point, bringing him much-needed acclaim and recognition.
