Films that returned to the big screen this year saw audiences flocking to cinemas to relive the magic of timeless storytelling. From evergreen blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kal Ho Naa Ho to cinematic gems like Tumbbad and Laila Majnu, this burgeoning trend of re-releases not only evoked a sense of nostalgia but also brought in impressive box office earnings. Here’s a look at the films that made a comeback in 2024, entertaining audiences and proving that classics never go out of style.
Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein
The film, directed by Gautham Menon, features R Madhavan, Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan in pivotal roles. It revolves around the love story of Maddy, a carefree and mischievous young man who is heads over heels in love with Reena. Maddy, in a bid to win Reena’s heart, even resorts to impersonating another man, forming the basic crux of the story.
Laila Majnu
The Imtiaz Ali directorial offers a modern twist on the timeless love story of Laila and Majnu, essayed by Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary. The film beautifully depicts the depth of love and heartbreak and is praised for its portrayal of emotional depth and romantic relationships. Its re-release struck a chord with cinephiles, opening to a solid Rs 30 lakh net at the Indian box office. Over its full run, the film amassed an impressive Rs 10 crore, reaffirming its status as a cherished cinematic gem.

Another Imtiaz Ali directorial that stole the spotlight in 2024 was Rockstar. Renowned for its powerful performances and AR Rahman’s exceptional music, the film remains a fan favourite. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Jordan, the story intricately weaves themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. The film’s re-release this year gave viewers an opportunity to relive Jordan’s compelling journey on the big screen. Rockstar earned Rs 5.65 crore in its first month of re-release, marking one of the biggest re-release successes of 2024. It grossed over Rs 10.5 crore-Rs 12 crore in India. Impressively, the re-release outperformed the original 2011 run by 43 percent, cementing its iconic status in Indian cinema.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

It also sold an astounding 10.25 lakh tickets, reaffirming its status as one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated horror masterpieces.
Love Aaj Kal
Besides Laila Majnu, another film directed by Imtiaz Ali that made it to theatres this year, is his 2009 directorial Love Aaj Kal, headlined by Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and the late Rishi Kapoor . The film was a commercial success upon its release. Given its success, Imtiaz Ali came with its sequel in 2020 starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan. The film, however, tanked at the box office.
Dangal
For fans of coming-of-age sports dramas, Aamir Khan’s Dangal was another iconic re-release of 2024. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the 2016 blockbuster marked the debut of Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, and Aparshakti Khurana. Karan Arjun
Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s Karan Arjun, directed by Rakesh Roshan, completed 30 years of its release this year and thus returned to theatres. The cult classic film about reincarnation explores the story of two brothers Karan (Salman) and Arjun (Shah Rukh Khan) who are killed during a fight with Thakur Sangram Singh to protect their mother (Rakhee). Following their deaths, the mother stays assured that they will return and take revenge.
