After playing 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for India since making his debut against Sri Lanka in June 2010, Ashwin announced his retirement on December 18, 2024.
Legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, December 18, was treated with a special gift by the Australian team players after the conclusion of the third India-Australia Test in Brisbane.
Following the match, which ended in a draw on Wednesday, veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon presented Ashwin with special memorabilia. He handed over a jersey, signed by the Australian players, to the 38-year-old. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared the video of the heartwarming moment on their official website.
In the video, Ashwin is seen hugging Lyon before shaking hands with Australia skipper Pat Cummins. The Indian spinner was all smiles as Lyon handed over the jersey to him. Both Australian stars congratulated Ashwin on a wonderful career. “Well done, mate, thank you, you have been great,” Cummins was heard saying to the talismanic India spinner.
Lyon also voiced that he had a lot of respect for Ashwin. He revealed having a lengthy discussion with the Indian spinner about bowling on Day 5 during the recently concluded Brisbane Test.
“Nothing but respect. Just the way Ash has conducted himself on and off the field for a number of years now, and his skill set is incredible. We’ve got different opinions on different things; there’s no right or wrong. But to have those conversations with a bowler like Ashwin is amazing,” Lyon told Fox Cricket (via NDTV).
Speaking further, Lyon added that he was hopeful of having many such conversations with Ashwin in the upcoming years.
“Different variations, different tactics, and understanding what he’s trying to do. We are both very different. So our conversation this morning was brilliant, and I hope we have more through the series and in the future as well,” Lyon concluded.
Ashwin made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies. Over a 14-year span, the 38-year-old established himself as one of the format’s best spinners. He has featured for India in 106 Tests, taking 537 wickets. He has played 23 Tests against Australia in which he scalped 115 wickets while bowling at an economy of 2.71. He also holds the record for taking the most wickets in a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with 29 scalps in the 2020-21 edition.
