A US YouTuber stepped out on the streets of New York to explore Bengali cuisine. To make the content more interesting, Xiaomanyc whose real name is Arieh Smith, decided to communicate with the shopkeepers in their mother tongue. His fluent Bengali impressed all. The vlogger recognises himself as a polyglot who loves to learn new languages and discover different cultures. He visited Jackson Heights which according to him, could be called “little Bangladesh”.
This place in Queens is home to many Bengali restaurants. Xiaoma purchased a hat from a roadside shop and the man on the receiving end was stunned by his Bengali pronunciation. The content creator then decided to try mishti paan (sweet betel leaf) which is used as a post-meal mouth freshener among the Bengali community.
When Smithwas ordering in Bengali, the shopkeeper asked him, “Wait, how do you speak Bengali?” In response, the vlogged smilingly said, “I’m just learning it.” He then went on to interact with some fellow customers who were also impressed by his delivery of Bengali words.
The next frame cuts to a tea shop where Smith met some Bangladeshi women. They asked him if he had ever visited Bangladesh, to which he replied, “No, I have never been there but would love to.” Smith then spoke about Saint Martin’s Island in Bangladesh and revealed his admiration for ilish fish. He later visited another shop to try fire paan which is quite popular in India as well.
At the end of the video, the vlogger was seen trying Kolkata-famous “fuchka”. He had his dinner at a restaurant selling Indian-Chinese and Bangladeshi food.
The YouTube video went widely viral. It has collected more than 2,30,000 views since being shared on the platform. Many users hailed Smith for respecting other languages and cultures. One of them commented, “The simplicity of Bengali people being all jolly and cheery when they see a New Yorker speaking Bangla is just very cute and wholesome to see.”
Echoing the same sentiment, another user said, “The smiles on these people’s faces are priceless. Everybody wants people to care about their culture and language.” A person praised the vlogger, saying, “It’s incredible how nicely you speak Bengali just after learning it. Bengali is a beautiful language but challenging and hard to master.”
