A YouTuber showed how Chongqing’s ground floors are built on different levels and shared the challenges of travelling from one place to another due to the confusing layout.
China’s Chongqing city is known for its unusual and complex urban planning, which can confuse first-time visitors. A recent YouTube video highlights how the city’s ground floors are actually built on different levels, making it difficult to figure out which is the true ground level. The content creator named Peter also pointed out the challenges of travelling from one place to another due to its confusing layout. He also discussed the city’s history and mentioned that it was expanded by adding three districts.
While the exact population in Chongqing city is unclear, it is estimated that around 32 million people live across an 82,000 square km area.
Beginning of the video, Peter says, “The story of this Chinese megacity starts and also kind of ends in 1997. Back then Chongqing was just a big city somewhere in South Western China. To boost the economy and make administration smoother, the Chinese government added three districts Fuling, Wanxian and Qianjiang. This step made Chongqing the biggest city in the world with a population of 32 million people and an area of 82,000 Square km, which is about the size of Austria. Nowadays certain areas of the city are so densely populated that original solutions to urban planning had to be made.”
The YouTuber also took the ride on the famous metro that travels through a building in Chongqing. The building, which is 19 stories tall, was designed with special noise reduction features, to ensure residents can sleep peacefully.
Peter then spoke about the most fascinating part of Chongqing, which is its floors. Figuring out what level you’re on can be confusing due to its unique terrain.
The city is built on multiple levels, which makes it hard to determine if you’re on the ground floor or on the 20th floor. According to him, exploring the city feels like moving through a giant maze. Peter warned that visitors should expect a bit of chaos and plenty of surprises, as getting lost is simply part of the experience in this unusual city.
The YouTuber shared an example to show how confusing Chongqing can be. While standing on a street, he spotted his hotel easily but couldn’t figure out how to get there. After asking locals for directions and taking three different elevators, he finally reached his hotel room on the 33rd floor.
