The singer recalled that even RD Burman’s music room had lost its charm.
RD Burman is among the most prolific names in Bollywood when it comes to music. However, there was a time when the legendary musician was jobless and newer artists like Bappi Lahiri and Laxmikant-Pyarelal got all the jobs. Abhijeet Bhattacharya recalled how this period of lull impacted RD Burman.
Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, Abhijeet Bhattacharya recalled, “People start to get troubled when someone new suddenly comes along and becomes everybody’s favourite. Something similar happened in the case of RD Burman and me. People started to be bothered by his closeness towards me. He once made a drink for me to celebrate my success.”
“People started to plant rumours and create misunderstandings between us. They started to spread rumours that I sang for his rivals or helped them imitate his work. I was fairly new, and I was helpless. I couldn’t do anything to stop those rumours. This impacted my relationship with RD Burman,” the singer mentioned.
He added, “However, RD Burman did realise that I was being wronged. I tried visiting him a couple of times after I became famous. I often passed his home on my way to Rajesh Roshan’s house. I would often spot him sitting on his balcony in the evenings. He was jobless for over five years.”
He recalled an anecdote and said, “Once I went to see him, he had a house help Manu Da and he attended to me at the door. After seeing me, he lied to me, ‘Pancham Da is not home.’ I knew he was lying by the tone of his voice. I attempted to visit him again, and this time he was sitting at the spot which usually used to be his music room. It used to be so lively, filled with musical instruments, singers, and musicians. Now, the place had lost its charm. It seemed like nobody had visited the room in a very long time, and neither had anybody cared to clean the space.”
“When he saw me, he told me, ‘Hey, you’re doing so well in your career, why are you here?’ And I said, ‘Spending even fifteen minutes with you makes me feel nice.’ He told me, ‘I am jobless right now’. Maybe he was trying to tell me that when he gets a big gig, he will approach me,” Abhijeet shared.
