UP Badaun Buddha Vihar Suryakund Dispute | Bajrang Dal Hindu | Controversy over Buddha tourist spot in Badaun: Bajrang Dal told Ram exile center; Buddhist said – Buddha preached here – Badaun News
There is a dispute between Buddhist and Hindu organizations regarding the Emperor Ashoka Buddha tourist destination in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. Both sides have their own claims regarding this site built on about 54 bighas of land.
,
The dispute started on December 7, 2024, when some Hindu organizations entered here. Allegedly, they damaged the idol of Lord Buddha. Erased the words written on the walls.
Buddhists demonstrated in many districts of UP in protest against this. The matter reached Delhi. Four Samajwadi Party MPs submitted a memorandum to the Union Minister demanding the return of the Bhante (Buddhist monk) who had been removed from there. Dainik Bhaskar Reached Ground Zero and deeply understood the controversy that has been going on for the last two weeks.
Hindu organizations are claiming these to be Shivalingas. Buddhist monks say that this shape has been formed due to the solidification of the cement kept in the sack.
First read the two statements-
Vikas Deep (Buddhist monk) said,
Local workers of Bajrang Dal entered Buddha Vihar Suryakund. They caused havoc. What they are calling Shivalinga is dried cement which has become like a stone. This is the ancient Suryakund, where Lord Buddha sat under the Peepal tree and gave sermons to his followers.
Bajrang Dal district coordinator Ujjwal Gupta said,
This is the exile center of Lord Ram. There are Yagyashalas there. Vedas were read there. Some people with criminal tendencies have now taken over this place.
Some things written on the wall in Buddha Vihar were erased. The blame for this is on Hindu organizations.
Suryakund is on 54 bigha land, five ancient stupas are also present. We first reached the same disputed site. Village Majhiya is on Dataganj Road, about 4 kilometers from Badaun district headquarters. At one end of this village is the Emperor Ashok Buddha tourist place, which is also called Suryakund. It is built on about 54 bighas of land. There are boundaries all around. There is a big pond of water inside it.
This is an ancient sun pond. Hindu organizations claim that this is the exile center of Lord Ram.
There are 5 very ancient stupas left, which are said to be from the time of Buddha. There is also a small Peepal tree here. People say that earlier there used to be a huge tree at this place. Buddha used to preach under it. Later that tree fell.
Many statues of Lord Buddha and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar are also installed in this campus. People who believe in Buddha and devotees keep coming to visit this place.
There are 5 such stupas here. Buddhist monks claim that these date back to the time of Buddha.
There are two stone like objects kept under the existing Peepal tree in this campus. A pit is dug nearby. Hindu organizations are alleging that the stone-like object is a Shivalinga, which was buried under this pit.
Due to the dispute, a PAC truck is parked in the campus. More than 20 PAC soldiers are ready. These soldiers keep an eye on ensuring that no dispute takes place in the campus.
Bhante said- Buddha came here in 415 AD, gave sermons under the tree. Here we found Buddhist monk (Bhante) Vikas Deep. He told- DM had declared this place as Emperor Ashok Buddha tourist destination in the year 2016. At that time there was Akhilesh Yadav’s government in UP. He got the boundary of this place done and did many beautification works.
Buddhist monks say that they are not stopping anyone from worshiping here.
There are 84 monasteries built in this campus. Some of them have fallen into disrepair, some remain. Lord Buddha had preached Majhyam Nikaya, hence this village was named Majhiya. There is a village next to it called Budhai. This village symbolizes that Buddha came here. The place where Buddha resided, Badaun was known as Raja Garh at that time. At that time, the District Magistrate of Garh was also of Yadav dynasty by name Buddha. That is why it is called the property of Buddha.
‘What RSS people are calling Shivlinga is dry cement.‘Bhante Vikas Deep says- A total of 4 monks were living here. People of RSS, Bajrang Dal came and attacked on December 7, 2024. He was saying that Shankarji (Shivlinga) has emerged here, Nandi ji has emerged. Whereas there was nothing here. He wanted to establish his dominance over this place. He had brought an inspector with him. Here he captured all the monks. They attacked the Buddha statue kept inside. Torn all the documents. Lord Buddha came here and spent his rainy season.
Hindu organizations are calling the two stones kept under the Peepal tree as Shivlinga.
Vikas Deep says- We don’t stop anyone for worship anyway. But there is no Shivalinga here. What Hindu organizations are calling Shivalinga is dried cement, which dries up when kept in a sack. Then it becomes like a stone. This place is the preaching place of Lord Buddha.
Here we met many more people, who had come from different villages and cities. They were angry that like the temple-mosque, Hindu organizations are trying to capture this place also.
At the same time, Bajrangdal says – Ram spends his exile here during Ramlila stage. Contrary to the claims of Buddhist monks, Bajrang Dal district coordinator Ujjwal Gupta says – There is Suryakund on Dataganj Road, which is the exile center of Lord Ram. When Ramlila takes place in Badaun, a scene of exile also comes during the staging.
PAC has been deployed after the dispute at Buddha Vihar, Suryakund.
Lord Ram spends his exile at this Suryakund. This is not happening now, it has been happening for 70-80 years. There are Yagyashalas there, Vedas were also read. There is a pond there, which is called Surajkund.
Ujjwal Gupta says- There is a pond there, which is called Surajkund. Now some people with criminal tendencies, who call themselves Buddhists, have converted it into Buddha Vihar. Gradually the entire place was captured. Scared the villagers. They also smoke charas and ganja.
Hindu organizations call this structure Yagyashala.
Shivalinga and idols were pressed under the platform. Ujjwal Gupta told – Buddhist people had buried the big Shivling, Nandi Maharaj, 4-5 feet below the stairs of a platform. The workers of our organization there came to know about this. After this our entire team went there. When excavation was done, idols of Shivling, Nandi Maharaj and Hanuman ji were found.
The matter reached Delhi, SP MPs submitted memorandum Regarding this entire episode, on December 20, 4 UP MPs Dharmendra Yadav, Aditya Yadav, Neeraj Maurya and Devesh Shakya met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in Delhi. Badaun MP Aditya Yadav told him – This place was established by King Mahipal in the 11th century. There is proof of this also in the documents. It was at this place that Lord Buddha gave sermons sitting under a Peepal tree. Many ancient stupas are also built here.
4 SP MPs submitted a memorandum to Union Minister Rijiju in Delhi.
On December 7, some anti-social elements reached Buddha Vihar and misbehaved with the people. Rumors spread that a Shivalinga had emerged there. They allege that the sub-inspector of the area also supported the anti-social elements.
The MP has demanded from the minister that the Buddhist monks removed from there should be sent back to Buddha Vihar and the accused sub-inspector should be suspended.
BJP did damage control When Buddhist monks started demonstrations in different districts regarding this episode, the officers came on the backfoot. The Buddhist monks who were removed from Buddha Vihar were sent back to Buddha Vihar on 20 December on the instructions of higher officials.
Buddhist monks allege that an attempt was made to damage the Buddha statue.
Actually, the people of Maurya community started going against the present government. Demonstrations started taking place in every district. After this, local BJP officials of Badaun informed the top leadership about the entire incident. Told, if damage control is not done then there may be loss in elections.
BJP officials also said that SP is supporting the Buddhist monks in this case. After this, on December 20, immediate action was taken to send the Buddhist monks back to Buddha Vihar. Now the local BJP MLA is taking credit for this.
