After Mayawati’s announcement, BSP workers will take to the streets at the country level after a long time. Earlier in July 2016, BSP workers had taken to the streets across the country. Then the current Minister of State for Transport Dayashankar Singh had given a controversial statement regarding Mayawati.

Mayawati had criticized the statement on Ambedkar.

During that time, except Mayawati, almost all the big leaders of BSP had come out on the streets demanding an apology from Dayashankar. After this the situation became such that BJP had suspended Dayashankar Singh from the party for 6 years. However, he returned home within 2 years.

Now BSP workers are going to take to the streets once again. This time too it is a matter of controversial statement. But, this time it is the case of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, the biggest hero of Dalits. In such a situation, many meanings of BSP taking to the streets are emerging.

First let us know when BSP cadre took to the streets.

1- There were demonstrations across the country on July 21, 2016 BJP leader Dayashankar, while talking to the media in Mau on July 20, 2016, had given a controversial statement about Mayawati. He had said that the way Mayawati is bargaining, even a prostitute does not negotiate with her profession. Mayawati sells the ticket worth Rs 1 crore, if someone wants the same ticket then she gives it to him worth Rs 2 crore.

After this statement of Dayashankar, on July 21, BSP workers came out on the streets across the country. Thousands of BSP workers demonstrated at Hazratganj intersection in Lucknow under the leadership of the then BSP leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui. After this Dayashankar was expelled from the party.

However, during that time BSP leaders had also raised controversial slogans regarding Dayashankar’s daughter. This was strongly opposed by Dayashankar Singh’s wife Swati Singh (now divorced). BJP had given the slogan ‘BJP in the field in honor of the daughter’. It was from here that Swati Singh’s political career shone. When the BJP government was formed in 2017, he got a department like Mandi Parishad as Minister of State (Independent Charge).

2- Mayawati herself had reached the villages of Saharanpur. In May 2017, a case of Dalit versus Thakur took place in Shabbirpur village of Saharanpur. 25 huts were burnt in this. The heat of the matter reached the state capital. Mayawati herself reached the spot on May 23, 2017. However, even then Mayawati’s helicopter was not allowed to land there.

After that, after reaching by road, Mayawati presented her views in a Raidas temple. BSP and BJP had come face to face in UP regarding this matter after a long time. Even at that time many BSP leaders including Satish Mishra, Lalji Verma had met CM Yogi Adityanath. This was the same time when BSP had come at number 3 in terms of seats in the assembly elections. A total of 18 of its MLAs had won.

3- Support of Bharat Bandh on the question of reservation On August 21, 2024, all the Dalit organizations of the country had announced Bharat Bandh. Supporting this movement, BSP had decided to submit a memorandum at all the district headquarters. Party chief Mayawati had sent instructions to all her officials in this regard.

However, the call for this movement or demonstration was not from BSP. Since this movement started getting support on a large scale in the country. Dr. Chandrashekhar’s Bhim Army and some frontal organizations of Azad Samaj Party and SP had supported it. After that BSP also joined the movement. He had given memorandum everywhere.

BSP avoids protesting on the streets Advocate Ram Ashish Ram, who has been associated with BSP politics for almost four decades, says – Party founder Kanshi Ram was of the opinion that if we protest on the streets, there will be lawsuits. There may be chaos. In such a situation, various actions can be taken against the workers.

The BSP cadre coming from the Dalit class was economically weak. In such a situation, to avoid fighting the case and police action, instead of taking to the streets, they resorted to public meetings.

Know why the final decision has to be taken now

1- BSP’s graph kept falling after 2012 Since its inception, BSP had emerged as the largest party of Dalits. The Dalit class, which was once the core bank of the Congress Party, had joined the BSP. The situation became such that between 1995 and 2007, BSP came to government four times. BSP government was formed thrice in alliance and once with a strong majority. Mayawati became the first CM of UP, who completed her 5-year tenure. But, with the loss of the 2012 elections, the situation worsened.

These are the figures of BSP's last three assembly elections.

These are the figures of BSP’s last three assembly elections.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party was reduced to zero seats. In the 2017 assembly elections, it became the third party, winning only 19 seats. Fought the 2019 Lok Sabha elections along with its arch rival SP, but did not get much benefit. However, the number of zero seats reached 10. But, the party won only 1 seat in the 2022 Assembly seat and did not even open its account in the 2024 Lok Sabha seat.

The situation is that Mayawati herself could not save her Rajya Sabha seat. After completion of her 6-year tenure, she did not reach there again.

BSP did not get a single seat in the by-elections 2024. Mayawati then announced that BSP would never field candidates in the by-elections.

BSP did not get a single seat in the by-election 2024. Mayawati then announced that BSP would never field candidates in the by-elections.

In this falling graph of BSP, it is believed that Dalit votes are shifting to other parties. Dalit vote in UP is more than 21 percent. But, at present Mayawati has only 9.39 percent votes. Even if Jatav community is left aside, most of the Dalit class voters have gone with BJP and SP.

2- Other parties keeping an eye on Dalit vote bank When BSP’s graph fell, other parties started targeting Dalit votes. While SP is talking about PDA, Congress is attacking BJP with the Constitution by talking about insulting Baba Saheb. Mayawati wants to show that she is the real heir of Ambedkar.

At the same time, BJP and its allies continuously say that PM Narendra Modi is taking Baba Saheb’s dream to the forefront. Now after the activation of these parties, the problems of BSP seem to be increasing. In such a situation, Mayawati has also announced to protest in the entire country on 24th December.

Let us understand this decision from the perspective of experts.

Most followers of Baba Saheb Awadhesh Verma, convener of Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, says – Baba Saheb has the highest number of followers in the entire country. In such a situation, there is strong opposition to Amit Shah’s statement on social media. All parties are opposing it. Therefore, now the accountability of the party doing politics lies mostly on their ideas.

Awadhesh Verma says- Whenever there is an attack on Baba Saheb’s name and the constitutional system, such protest will have to be made. If this is not done, then a wrong message is sent to their followers. Even in the privatization of electricity, reservation is being attacked the most.

Danger of going to our biggest vote bank Professor Ravikant of Lucknow University, who comes from the Dalit community, says – It is discussed in the political circles that Mayawati is under the pressure of BJP. In such a situation, this move of BSP could also be to end the agenda of Congress. This can have two meanings.

Mayawati is only demanding an apology, while other parties are even talking about resignation. In such a situation, it is not a big deal that Amit Shah apologizes and BSP takes the lead. Only BJP benefits from BSP leading. Because, if Dalit vote goes with Congress or SP then there is more loss for BJP.

Secondly, at present the biggest vote bank of BSP is Jatav. Jatav community is considered to be the most Ambedkarite. In such a situation, if this vote shifts towards Congress, it will be a big blow for Mayawati. Now the biggest challenge for Mayawati is to save the Jatav vote.

Experts say that if Mayawati wants to move ahead in the future, it is most important for her to get Dalit votes back. In such a situation, BSP will try to regain its old vote bank on the pretext of the issue of statement on Baba Saheb. So that he can regain his old status in the politics of UP and the country.
