Canada Introduces Changes In Express Entry System, Indian Aspirants Likely To Be Impacted – News18

The changes in the Express Entry system in Canada will come into effect in spring 2025 after which those applying for PR will not get extra points for holding job offers.
Canada has announced a major shift in its Express Entry system under which the candidates applying for permanent residency starting spring next year will no longer receive additional points for holding a job offer.
The move is likely to impact the Indian nationals seeking to move to the North American country in search of better job opportunities.
What Has The Canadian Govt Said?
Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, said that the government is taking steps to “reduce fraud” while also continuing to bring in skilled labour.
“Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes and supports they need to thrive,” he said.
Once the programme comes into effect, all Express Entry aspirants, including those currently working in the country temporarily, will be impacted. However, those who have already received invitations to apply or whose applications for PR to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are in process will not be affected under the new scheme.
The government’s latest move will apply to all candidates holding job offers – both current and new ones – under the Express Extry.
Canada’s premier immigration system, Express Entry, oversees applications for permanent residency through various programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and selected streams of the Provincial Nominee Program.
How Will It Impact Indian Professionals?
India maintained its dominance in Express Entry invitations in 2023, with 52,106 Indian nationals receiving invitations to apply for permanent residency, accounting for 47.2% of the total issued that year. However, the potential removal of job-offer points—currently adding 50 to 200 points—could pose significant challenges for applicants from India and other countries.
The government’s step comes on the back of previous moves to overhaul the country’s immigration system.
In June 2022, the government brought in amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act that allowed it to pick and choose immigrants with certain skills.
