Chinese toys have witnessed massive growth in sales in the Asian market over the last few years. There was a time when “Made in China” was only recognised as a label associated with cheap alternatives of trendy accessories. These mass-produced goods are not only popular in India and its neighbouring countries but have also gained worldwide prominence.

Earlier this year, a rubber-coated plush character named Labubu was launched in Asia. The made-in-China product has now emerged as the “hottest toy” in the continent, the South China Morning Post reported.

What sets Labubu apart from the other soft toys is its quirky appearance and unique design. The character comes in different sizes and its devilish eyes, pointy ears and mischievous grin have captured the hearts of fans. The toy has been designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and China’s leading retailer Pop Mart is producing it.

Besides kids, many toy enthusiasts have already added Labubu to their collections, the SCMP report claimed. In Pop Mart stores in China, Labubu has now become one of the top-selling products. A customer in Shanghai’s Xuhui district had been waiting to purchase the toy for months.

When she finally got the product at a local store, the woman expressed her excitement saying, “I could never get one when the stock was replenished online because so many people rushed to buy at the same time. Today, I finally got one at an official store, and I’m so happy. I love the design; I feel happy when looking at it.”

Besides China, Labubu has gained popularity in other Asian countries as well. Back in April, a member of the popular K-pop group Blackpink was captured posing with a Labubu doll featuring a keychain. Since then, it has become one of the most sought-after toys in Thailand. The trend has now spread to Vietnam and Singapore as well.

Thanks to Labubu, Pop Mart’s overall revenue has increased by up to 125 per cent over the previous year. While sales from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and foreign markets surged by more than 440 per cent, mainland China’s revenue increased by as much as 60 per cent. This toy is categorised under their premium segment. A set of six Labubu figures has a price tag of around 600 yuan (approximately INR 7000).
