In a massive drama unfolding in Tamil Nadu over the government’s handling of the Anna University sexual assault case, state BJP chief K Annamalai on Thursday vowed to whip himself six times tomorrow, fast for 48 days, and not wear sandals until the DMK is removed from power.

Addressing a press conference, Annamalai removed his shoes and vowed to walk barefooted until the MK Stalin-led DMK government is uprooted from power.

Annamalai Makes Dramatic Announcements

He announced that he would hold a protest in front of his house on Friday, where he would whip himself six times. “Starting from tomorrow, I will fast for 48 days and appeal to the six-armed Murugan. Tomorrow, a protest will be held in front of the house of every BJP member. From tomorrow until the DMK is removed from power, I will not wear sandals. There must be an end to this,” he said.

Anna University Sexual Assault Case

Annamalai’s dramatic announcements come after he alleged that the person, who was arrested in the Anna University sexual assault case, was a history sheeter with over 15 cases pending on him and accused the arrested person of being linked to DMK. He claimed that Gnanasekharan, the accused, was a deputy organiser of DMK’s Saidai East student wing. Annamalai wrote to National Commission for Women and made the allegations.

A second-year student of the university in Chennai was sexually assaulted on the campus on Monday night when she was talking to her friend at around 8 pm.

She lodged a complaint at the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station, after which the Chennai Police said that one person, a Biryani seller, was arrested.

Earlier today, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan and other party workers were detained by the Tamil Nadu Police as BJP and AIADMK staged protests.

“This is atrocious. They want to crush our voice,” Soundararajan said.
