‘He Wanted That Hundred’: Sanjay Manjrekar On Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Disappointment At MCG – News18

Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out on his century in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test getting dismissed at 82.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli were involved in a horrendous mix-up that resulted in the southpaw’s run-out on the second day of the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). It was the 41st over of the Indian innings when a well-set Jaiswal tapped the ball towards mid-off and called for a quick single. Kohli, initially responding to the call, took a couple of steps forward but then glanced back to track the ball’s position.
Deciding against the risky run, he returned to his crease. By then, Jaiswal had already sprinted past the halfway mark, leaving both batters stranded at the non-striker’s end. The miscommunication resulted in Jaiswal being run out.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar felt that Jaiswal was disappointed missing out on a potential Test ton.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal, for a guy who is so young, had a few things to say to Virat Kohli. He was making a case there. That shows how much the innings was important to him. Out of habit, he would have got a hundred and that hundred would have been even more impressive than the one that Perth. Although that was a big one, the pitch in Perth had become a little Indian-like for two days,” Manjrekar said during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo.
Sanjay Manjrekar was in awe of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The ex-Indian batter said that Jaiswal did not look much perturbed by the Australian bowlers, apart from Mitchell Starc.
“This was a typical Australian pitch (and a) quality attack. So, he wanted that hundred. We saw that there are some great facets to Jaiswal’s batting. When he got to 50, he had spent two hours at the crease. So, that game he has. And, barring Mitchell Starc, he looks comfortable against all the other fast bowlers,” the former Indian cricketer said.
Shortly after Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal, Virat Kohli also walked back soon, getting dismissed for 36 by Scott Boland. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar forged a solid partnership to keep India alive in the contest. While Sundar was dismissed for 50, Reddy went on to score his maiden Test century.
