Young Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal joined legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virender Sehwag in an elite list of Indian batters on Monday, December 30. The 23-year-old left-handed batter became the fourth Indian to score more than 1400 Test runs in a calendar year. Jaiswal achieved the feat during Day 5’s play of the ongoing fourth India-Australia Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Jaiswal, who made his Test debut for India against the West Indies in July 2023 and scored 171 in the first innings, has 1400 runs to his name in 29 innings of 15 matches played so far this year. The young cricketer from Mumbai, who earned a place in the Indian side after scoring a mountain of runs in domestic cricket, has scored three centuries and eight fifties so far in 2024.

The record of scoring most Test runs in a calendar year for India is in the name of Tendulkar. The all-time leading run scorer in Test cricket hammered 1562 runs in 14 matches played in 2010. He is followed by Sehwag, who finished with 1462 runs in 2008 and 1422 runs in 2010. On both these occasions he played 14 matches. Sehwag is the only Indian cricketer to score more than 1400 runs in a calendar year in Test cricket on multiple occasions.

Legendary Gavaskar, who was the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, also hammered 1407 runs for Team India in 1979.

Jaiswal, who is India’s highest-ranked Test batter, will be a key player for India in the 340-run chase against Australia at the MCG. He will look to finish the memorable year with a big score and also take a shot at breaking Tendulkar’s record of scoring the most Test runs in a calendar year for India.

The overall record of scoring most runs in a calendar year in Test cricket is held by former Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf. In 2006, Yousuf played 11 matches for the Pakistani team and amassed a total of 1788 runs.

In the list of batters with the most Test runs in 2024, Jaiswal is only behind world No. 1 Test batter Joe Root. The former England Test captain played 17 matches this year and scored 1556 runs.
