In January 2024, she had connected with the accused who claimed to be a US-based freelance model on a dating app.
A 23-year-old BBA graduate worked as a technical recruiter for a top multinational firm. But that was not all he did. Posing as a US model, he blackmailed young women into sharing intimate photos and videos using dating apps but his double life was exposed when a second-year Delhi University student, after months of exploitation and extortion, approached the Delhi police.
In January 2024, she had connected with the accused who claimed to be a US-based freelance model on a dating app. Friendly conversation led to the sharing of intimate photos and videos which became a tool for blackmail. Under pressure, the student fulfilled the initial demands but later confided in her family after which a complaint was filed and a case was registered.
When the police tracked bank accounts and other social media handles, they were led to Shakarpur in east Delhi.
“The raiding team found that the alleged US-based model who was blackmailing the student actually turned out to be 23-year-old Tushar Bisht, who lived with his family in east Delhi,” a senior police officer said as per The Times of India.
The police said, “Initial investigation revealed that the accused interacted with over 500 women on dating apps and 200 more across social media platforms and messaging services. The scale of his operation is concerning, with evidence showing at least 60 active extortion conversations in progress when he was apprehended.”
The accused used a virtual international phone number and photographs of a Brazilian model to create profiles targeting women aged 18-30. Police said that the accused used to post social media updates regularly and to maintain the illusion of being a foreign model visiting India for work.
When victims requested in-person meetings, he would make excuses. The police said, “The accused initially engaged in these activities for entertainment, but it evolved into a systematic extortion scheme. Once he obtained compromising content, he would threaten to leak or sell the material online unless the victims paid him.”
