Bumrah, who sits at the No. 1 position in the ICC Test bowler’s ranking, said he is aggressive, but his aggression is different from others.
Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who sits at the No. 1 position in the ICC Test bowler’s rankings, was seen losing his cool on Friday (January 3). He got into a heated argument with Australian batter Sam Konstas during the final hour of the first day’s play of the fifth India-Australia Test in Sydney, and then after taking Usman Khawaja’s wicket on the final ball of Day 1, Bumrah charged towards Konstas to celebrate in an aggressive manner.
Bumrah’s charged-up celebration came as a shock for many fans and experts of the game, as it was one of the rare moments when Bumrah lost his cool. The 31-year-old pacer, who holds the record for taking the most wickets in a Test series for India away from home, in a recent interview with Forbes India opened up about his attitude and said he’s aggressive, but it’s just that he doesn’t go and abuse the batter.
“I am aggressive; it’s just that I don’t need to go and abuse the batsman, because when I was a kid, I saw the bowlers on the television screaming and shouting and going head-to-head. When I tried it, I became too aggressive; when I tried to play in club cricket, it didn’t work in my favour.”
“When I realised that I go overboard, to control that I consciously worked on it. When I’m nice and calm and relaxed, people don’t know what’s going on in my head, so that gives me a mental advantage. That helps me to stay calm and make better decisions,” he added.
Bumrah, who won Player of the Tournament award in T20 World Cup 2024, feels that in a sport like cricket, which favours batters heavily, bowlers should be aggressive.
“And I am aggressive; I’m not there to give throwdowns to batters to hit. I’m there to do my job and make my team win. But my way of aggression is different; I don’t need to abuse, but my body language and the way I run in and bowl—that is how I want to show aggression.”
“I obviously won’t lie; it happens. But I don’t start it (sledge),” said Bumrah. “But when it comes my way, I don’t back down as well, because that is how I started playing. It is very easy for me to start that battle, but I don’t do it consciously because I want to be in my zone or my moment.”
