How Did Farah Khan Get A Break In Bollywood?

Born to Kamran Khan, a former stuntman-turned-filmmaker, and Menaka Irani, Farah Khan was inspired by Michael Jackson’s iconic dance moves in Thriller.

While studying at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, she decided to pursue her passion for dance and formed her own dance group.

Farah’s Bollywood journey began in 1986 as a choreographer for Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaya.

Her big break came when renowned choreographer Saroj Khan walked out of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

Farah stepped in and choreographed the iconic song, Pehla Nasha, marking her first major project as the lead choreographer. Her fresh approach to dance quickly set her apart, establishing her as one of the best in the industry.

Over the years, Farah has choreographed memorable tracks in films like Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Virasat, Dil Se, Kaho Na…Pyaar Hai, Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Dabangg, and more.

1. Farah Khan’s parents, Kamran Khan and Menaka Irani, divorced when she was just 5 years old. As a result, she and her brother, Sajid Khan, spent their childhood shuttling between both parents.

2. Farah’s mother, Menaka Irani, is the sister of Honey Irani, Javed Akhtar’s first wife, and the aunt of popular child actress, Daisy Irani.

3. Farah’s first cousins are actor-director Farhan Akhtar and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar.

4. In 2004, Farah Khan earned a Tony Award nomination in the Best Choreographer category for her work in the musical, Bombay Dreams.

5. She made her directorial debut in 2004 with Main Hoon Na, starring Shah Rukh Khan.

6. With the release of Main Hoon Na, Farah became the second female director after Mira Nair to receive a Filmfare nomination in the Best Director category.
