Everything you need to know about the 2025 season of the SA20

The third season of the SA20 will kick off on January 9 with reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape clashing against MI Cape Town at St. George Park in Gqeberha in the opening encounter.

The league phase, to be played in a single-round robin format, will comprise a total of 30 games and the top four teams will advance to the playoffs. After two Qualifiers and an Eliminator, the final of the 2025 SA20 will be hosted at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on February 8.

Besides the emerging stars of South African cricket, some top international stalwarts like Kane Williamson, Liam Livingstone, Rashid Khan and Moeen Ali will compete in the six-team competition. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik will make his SA20 debut this year. He is the first Indian ever to feature in the franchise tournament.

Paarl Royals have signed Karthik as a replacement for Jos Buttler who has decided to skip the season due to his commitments with the England national team.

Ben Stokes who was set to represent the Rashid Khan-led MI Cape Town, also remains unavailable. The England Test captain has been ruled out for a hamstring injury which he suffered in a recent series against New Zealand.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape, under the captaincy of Aiden Markram, aim to complete a hat-trick, having won the SA 20 competition in the last two editions. Meanwhile, their derby rivals, MI Cape Town, will look to make a strong statement after finishing at the bottom of the table last term.

SA20 2025 Venues:

The tournament will be played across six stadiums in South Africa. Apart from St George’s Park and the Wanderers Stadium, the matches will be hosted at Kingsmead in Durban, Boland Park in Paarl, SuperSport Park in Centurion and Newlands in Cape Town.
