The court approved the bail on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after Gandhi appeared virtually before the court
A special court in Pune on Friday granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a defamation case concerning his alleged objectionable remarks on Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar.
The court approved the bail on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after Gandhi appeared virtually before the court. Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi stood as surety for Gandhi during the proceedings.
The defamation case stemmed from a speech that Gandhi delivered in London in March 2023, where he reportedly made remarks on Savarkar, citing a book written by the ideologue. These remarks led to the filing of a complaint by Savarkar’s grandnephew, triggering the legal action.
Advocate Milind Pawar, representing Gandhi, confirmed that the court had granted the Congress leader permanent exemption from appearing before it in future hearings.
The matter will now be heard again on February 18, 2025.
