The Border Security Force (BSF) has begun forward patrolling along the India-Bangladesh border amid the volatile situation in the neighbouring country, keeping a close eye on rivulets and jungles to clamp down on instances of infiltration.
In areas such as Maldah and Sukhdevpur, the force had to face protests from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) during fencing along the border. While the skirmishes were resolved, the work is still stalled in Maldah. In Coochbehar too, the BGB protested to fencing along the border and the issue was resolved only when the BSF intervened.
Several border meetings have taken place between both the sides to resolve the issues and sources in BSF told News18 that they believed flag meetings would help resolve the stand-off and kick-start the fencing work.
For the Centre, fencing the unguarded areas along the border is top priority now. The technicalities of resolving land issues for fencing are also being ironed out on a war footing, said sources.
The day when BGB created trouble in Maldah, local villagers came forward in support of Indian forces. Sources have told News18 that to capitalise on the sentiment, the force will also focus more on village coordination apart from increased electronic surveillance in vulnerable patches.
For now, night cameras with drones keep an eye on the border. In case someone tries to cross over from the other side, an alarm is triggered, alerting the forces.
