Devjit Saikia becomes BCCI secretary: Prabhtej Singh Bhatia becomes treasurer; Both were elected unopposed

Devjit Saikia has become the Secretary of BCCI, while Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has been elected as the Treasurer. Both have been elected unopposed in the BCCI AGM on Sunday. Saikia and Bhatia had filed nominations last week. Apart from him, no one else filled the nomination form.

Saikia had taken over from former secretary Jai Shah in December last month. He was made the interim secretary. Jay Shah has been made the Chairman of ICC, due to which he left the post of BCCI Secretary.

Saikia is part of Assam Cricket Association Devjit Saikia was made the interim secretary of BCCI on 6 December itself. He is part of Assam Cricket Association. Who replaced Jai Shah. Earlier there were reports that Arun Jaitley’s son Rohan Jaitley would become the secretary, but last month itself, the name of Joint Secretary Saikia came forward.

On the other hand, Bhatia is part of Chhattisgarh Cricket Association. He will take over as treasurer in place of Ashish Shelar. Ashish became a part of the Maharashtra government and as per the rules, central and state government ministers cannot become a part of the BCCI.

The post of Joint Secretary will be vacant The post of Joint Secretary will become vacant as soon as Saikia takes over as Secretary. The decision on the post of Joint Secretary will also be taken in the meeting on January 12. Saikia will remain on the post of BCCI Secretary only till September. After that there will be elections again.

A member can remain on the official post in BCCI for only 3 years, after which he has to serve a cooling off period of 3 years. The three-year tenure of the present post of Secretary will end in September this year. Before Saikia, Jai Shah was appointed to this post for two and a half years. Saikia will be elected secretary in the by-election on January 12. He can also apply for this post again in September.
