Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is all set to become the new captain of Indian Premier League side Lucknow Super Giants. The 27-year-old cricketer was signed for Rs 27 crore by LSG in the IPL 2025 mega auction, which was held in Jeddah last year. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, “Rishabh Pant is set to be named captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of IPL 2025.”

Pant made his debut in the cash-rich league in 2016 for Delhi Capitals and was associated with the Delhi-based franchise from 2016 to 2024. Pant is the most capped player in DC’s history and also holds the record of scoring the most runs for the franchise. He was appointed as DC captain in 2021 and led the franchise in 2021, 2022, and the 2024 edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league.

Pant was not retained by DC ahead of the IPL mega auction, after which he entered the players pool and was snapped by LSG for the biggest deal in IPL history for any player.

LSG made its IPL debut in 2022 and played the first three seasons under KL Rahul’s captaincy. Despite leading LSG to the IPL playoffs in his first season as captain, the franchise did not retain Rahul.

Before the mega auction, star West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran was leading the race to become LSG captain. Pooran has served as West Indies T20I captain in the past, and he also leads MI New York in MLC. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter was retained for Rs 21 crore by the Sanjiv Goenka-owned side.

Apart from Pooran and Pant, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, who are Australia and South Africa’s T20I captains, respectively, were reportedly in the race to become the new captain of Lucknow Super Giants.

If confirmed, Pant will become the fourth player to lead LSG in the IPL. Before him, Rahul, Krunal Pandya, and Pooran have captained LSG. While Rahul was the full-time captain, Krunal led the side after Rahul was ruled out of IPL 2023, and Pooran took charge of the franchise for one match in IPL 2024.
