As Donald Trump rises to take oath as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, he will hold two Bibles in his hand – one used by Abraham Lincoln for his inauguration in 1861 and another given by Trump’s mother in 1955.

He had used the same two bibles when he took oath for his first term in 2017, his inaugural committee said.

The team said that Trump’s message behind using the bible is that he is swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States”.

Notably, Trump won’t be the first US President to do this today as several other US Presidents – Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard M. Nixon and Barack Obama – did the same. Lincoln’s Bible is very popular among the leaders in the US. Barack Obama had also sworn in on Lincoln’s Bible twice.

What Are Two Bibles In Trump’s Hand?

The second bible other than the one used by Lincoln is a 1953 Revised Standard Version edition that Trump’s mother Mary Anne MacLeod Trump gave to him after his graduation from a Sunday school in 1955 when he was just 9.

Trump’s name is carved in the front of the Bible and the inside cover is signed by church officials, according to the inaugural team’s statement.

During the ceremony, Vice President-elect JD Vance will also present his family roots as he will swear on a King James version of the bible given to him by his maternal great-grandmother in 2003. He used to call her “Mamaw” Bonnie. He was gifted the bible when he left home for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, the inaugural committee said.

Are US Presidents Mandated To Use Bible?

The Constitution of the United States of America mandates the presidents to take the oath of office, it does not require them to do so by placing their hand on any religious book, or any book for that matter. Most of the US presidents have traditionally used a family bible.

The tradition was first practised by George Washington during his first inauguration, and it has been followed since then by his successors.

Other US presidents such as Warren G. Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush have all used the same bible used by Washington.
