The third Test of the ongoing three-match series between India and New Zealand is scheduled to take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from Friday (November 1) onwards.
After losing the first two Tests of the ongoing series against New Zealand by 8 wickets and 113 runs respectively, India would like to come up with a big show in the third and final match of the series, which is scheduled to take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from Friday (November 1) onwards.
India has a good record in Tests played at Wankhede Stadium, and in the last match played at the iconic stadium, India hammered the Black Caps by 372 runs.
During the third Test against New Zealand, Indian players will have a chance to break multiple records. Here’s a look:
First bowler to take 200 wickets in WTC: Star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has 191 wickets to his name in 39 WTC matches played so far. If he manages to dismiss at least nine Kiwi batters in the third Test, then he will become the first bowler in the world to take 200 wickets in the World Test Championship.
Most sixes in a calendar year: In 10 Tests played so far in 2024, India’s opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has hammered 32 sixes. If the 22-year-old left-handed batter hits two more sixes in the third Test against the Black Caps, then he will break former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum’s record of hitting most sixes in a calendar year in Tests. McCullum hammered 33 maximums in nine Tests for the Kiwis in 2014.
Most wickets in India: In 130 matches played so far in India across formats, Ashwin has 472 wickets to his name. He needs five more wickets in the third Test to break Anil Kumble’s record and become the leading wicket-taker in matches played on Indian soil. Kumble dismissed 350 batters in Tests and 126 in ODIs in matches played in India, whereas Ashwin has 380, 70, and 22 wickets to his name in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, respectively.
2nd Indian to take 50 wickets in one edition of WTC: In 10 matches of WTC 2023-25, Jasprit Bumrah has picked up 45 wickets for India. If he dismisses five Kiwi batters in the 3rd Test, then he will become the second Indian after Ashwin to take 50 or more wickets in one edition of the World Test Championship.
Most sixes for India in Tests: Rohit has 88 sixes to his name in 63 Tests for Team India, and four more maximums in the third Test against New Zealand will help him go past Virender Sehwag’s tally of 91 sixes and become India’s leading six-hitter in the five-day format of the game.
Apart from Indian players, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham will also have a chance to become the first captain in the world to win all three matches of a Test series in India. No team in the world has whitewashed India in three-match Test series played in India, and Kiwis can create history with a win in the Wankhede Test.
