Head coach of the Australian team has revealed who he will nominate to lead the side for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Ahead of the T20 World Cup being held in the West Indies and the United States of America, head coach, Andrew McDonald has revealed his pick to lead Australia for the tournament.
Cricket Australia’s website reported that Mitchell Marsh would be the coach’s pick to captain the team for the T20 World Cup. “I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas,” said McDonald.
However, Australia are yet to announce their squad for the T20WC. But the head coach is happy with Mitchell Marsh’s leadership capabilities. The all-rounder has been the unofficial captain of the side in 8 games since captaining the side in 8 games since August 2023. Marsh’s captaincy has only led to just one loss for the team so far.
“We’re happy and comfortable with the way he’s been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he’s the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course,” added the coach.

“There’s a lot of stresses,” McDonald said of the star batter who was player of the match in Australia’s World Test Championship Final and ODI World Cup Final wins.
The head coach praised Marsh’s capability to shut down his critics and more importantly, was coming out of an injury into the World Cup 2023 which they went on to win. Andrew said, “He was coming off a significant injury through that World Cup, and it takes a lot out of you mentally and physically.”
McDonald believes that they have worked to improve on giving appropriate rest periods to their players so they have enough time to recover and perform in the big tournaments. “There’s no doubt we can learn some lessons on the back of Trav’s entry into all three formats and how to give him a bit of rest in the Australian summer,” he said.
“So there’s some balance there, and I think we do it really well with bowlers where it makes a lot of sense because it’s more the physical element that we try to mitigate against some injuries and make sure they’re fresh at the right times,” McDonald added.
Mitchell Marsh will now have his attention directed to the Indian Premier League where he represents the Delhi Capitals and will look to make the best use of his time playing against some of the best oppositions to prepare themselves and go into the World Cup in the best form possible.
