Smart metering project will be implemented to increase electricity services and provide smooth supply in the districts of Varanasi and Azamgarh division. Homes of 27.3 lakh consumers in Varanasi, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Ballia and Mau districts of Varanasi cluster will be made smart.

Apart from this, smart meters will be installed on distribution transformers and feeders. These meters will be installed by the Discom and no fee will be charged from the consumers for installing the smart meter.

Meter will be installed free of cost

A presentation of the smart metering project was given under the chairmanship of Varanasi Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma. Officials of the service provider GMR Kashi Smart Meters Limited said that so far 5,15,122 consumers have been selected for installing smart meters in the Varanasi cluster of the smart metering project.

Survey of 29,366 distribution transformers and 1477 feeders has been completed. GMR agency is conducting door-to-door survey of all consumers. Three-level technical quality check is being done on the data obtained from the survey, and if the information is found correct after the check, smart meters are being installed.

The commissioner said that the project will be beneficial for consumers and they will be able to control their electricity consumption through continuous monitoring. The quality of consumer services in the power distribution sector will improve.

Smart meter will be recharged like a mobile

Devtosh Chaturvedi, Chief Executive Officer of GMR Company, said that the smart meter works automatically and the consumer does not need any special technical knowledge. The smart meter can be recharged easily like a mobile. The data transmitted from the smart meter is encrypted and the privacy of the data is ensured.

Officials said that the smart meter will record electricity usage and also keep an accurate measurement of power consumption. Consumers will receive bills based on their actual consumption. Due to the facility of providing real time data in smart meters, consumers can monitor electricity consumption and reduce unnecessary expenses. The process of smart meter can be operated even from a distance.

Awareness will be raised for smart meters through various mediums

Devtosh Chaturvedi, Chief Executive Officer of GMR Company, said that efforts are being made to increase awareness about smart meters among consumers. The help of public representatives and residential welfare associations will also be taken to make people aware of the benefits of smart meters. The implementing agency and the electricity department will increase awareness through social media, websites, SMS, banners, 1912 control room, and camps in schools.
