Wing Commander Abhinnandan became a national phenomenon in 2019 after getting captured by Pakistani officials as his plane was shot down inside Pakistani territory. His calm demeanour during being questioned by Pakistani officials and his bravery became an exemplary force. He was hailed as a national hero. He was repatriated on March 1, 2019. While Wing Commander Abhinandan’s heroic escapade became the talk of the country, his moustache also garnered considerable attention. Many people have tried to grow a moustache like him ever since videos of him went viral. One of them is Constable Manoj Kumar Sharma, who works in the IG office in Bareilly. Manoj is a member of the police department in Bareilly. His distinctive moustache is a topic of conversation not only within the police department and administration but also on Bareilly’s social media.
Manoj Kumar Sharma’s moustache is admired by the residents of Bareilly as well as several high-ranking officials. He is assigned as a police constable in the crime branch of Bareilly. Beyond his professional duties, he is recognised for his unique moustache. Manoj’s interest in maintaining a distinctive moustache was influenced by Wing Commander Abhinandan. Manoj’s father was an officer in the police department before him, which inspired Manoj to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Manoj says that he used to be clean-shaven. Later, inspired by Wing Commander Abhinandan, he started growing this type of moustache. In addition, he also likes the moustache of Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar. Motivated by their styles, Manoj decided to maintain his moustache similarly. Manoj mentions that it is not easy to maintain this type of moustache. He adjusts it every third day, and the maintenance cost is about Rs 100 every third day.
Manoj told Local 18 that his moustache is admired not only by the people of Bareilly but also by top officials. These officials have frequently praised his moustache. Manoj recalls that when he first started growing it, the then SSP Prabhakar Chaudhary called him to express his appreciation and awarded him a cash reward of Rs 1000. In addition to this, Prabhakar also presented him with a letter of commendation.
