Assam’s ‘Moidams’ were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A bilateral agreement was signed between India and the US for the return and preservation of cultural properties. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh president Prabhat Jha passed away.

MISCELLANEOUS
1. Assam’s ‘Moidams’ included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site: Assam’s ‘Moidams’ have been included in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites on Friday, July 26. This announcement was made during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. This is the first time that a heritage site from the Northeast has made it to the list.
Moidams of Assam were nominated from India for the year 2023-24.
- ‘Moidums’ are unique mound-like structures resembling pyramids.
- These were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty to bury their dynasty members along with their beloved possessions.
- The Tai-Ahom dynasty, which came from China, ruled this region in Assam for about 600 years.
- The 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is being held at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Centre (IECC) in New Delhi.
- This meeting started on July 21 and will continue till July 31.
- The Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Education, Delhi Government and Ministry of Environment are involved in its organisation.
- The Ministry of Culture and its attached office, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are the nodal agencies hosting the session this year.
- UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is a specialized agency of the United Nations.
- It strives to establish peace through international cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture.
- UNESCO is headquartered in Paris and has more than 50 regional offices around the world.
- It has 195 member countries and 9 associate members.
- UNESCO was established on November 16, 1945.
- The first session of the General Conference of UNESCO was held in Paris during November–December 1946.
AGREEMENT
2. Bilateral agreement between India and America for return and preservation of cultural properties: India and the US today, July 26, signed the first bilateral agreement for the return and preservation of cultural properties. The agreement also includes preventing illegal trafficking of stolen Indian antiquities.
US Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Secretary, Union Ministry of Culture signed the Govind Mohan Bilateral Agreement.
- Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was also present on this occasion.
- During the Prime Minister’s visit to the US in 2023, 262 antiquities were returned to India.
- It includes exquisite figures of Nataraja, Hanuman, Brahma-Brahmani, couple, Mahishasura-Mardini and dancing Ganesha.
- In the coming time, 297 antiquities will be brought from America.
- This agreement will greatly simplify the process of returning stolen antiques.

3. Approval of Rs 284.19 crore for JNPA: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today, on 26 July, approved Rs 284.19 crore for the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. This will set up an integrated agri-export facility at the port.
At this cost, a state-of-the-art agricultural facility will be established in an area of 67,422 square meters.
- This facility will be developed through PPP i.e. Public-Private Partnership model.
- Now the agricultural products to be exported can be preserved for a longer period of time.
- This facility will benefit exporters of non-basmati rice, maize, spices, onion and wheat as well as meat and sea products.
- 1800 tonnes of frozen storage and 5800 tonnes of cold storage will be added at the port.
- Warehouse capacity for grain and dry goods will also increase by 12,000 tonnes.

4. BJP leader Prabhat Jha passed away: Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh president Prabhat Jha passed away on 26 July. 67-year-old Jha was ill for a long time.
Prabhat Jha was originally from Bihar.
- He was born on 4 June 1957 in Hariharpur village, Darbhanga, Bihar.
- After his initial education, Prabhat Jha completed his BSc from PGV College, Gwalior, MA in Political Science from Madhav College and LLB from MLB College.
- He was the Madhya Pradesh BJP President from 8 May 2010 to 16 December 2012.
- He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 2008 and for the second time in 2014.
- In 2018, Prabhat Jha was made the National Vice President of BJP.

5. Opening ceremony outside the stadium for the first time in Olympic history: For the first time in the 129-year history of Olympics, the opening ceremony will be held outside the stadium and not inside. The ceremony of the 34th Olympic Games will begin from the Seine River in Paris. 10,500 athletes from 206 countries and associations will parade on boats on the Seine River. India’s contingent will be seen at number 84.
The parade will be 6 km long. A record 3 to 4 lakh spectators are expected to arrive to see it.
- The opening ceremony will begin at 11 pm on July 26 in Paris, the capital of France.
- Starting from the River Seine, the 6km long parade will run till the Trocadéro Gardens.
- More than 10 thousand athletes will participate in it.
- All the athletes will attend the ceremony in around 94 boats.
- The boats are equipped with cameras that will allow players from each country to be seen on TV and online during the Parade of Nations.
- The parade will see athletes travel through the city on boats on the River Seine, arriving at the Trocadéro Gardens.
- The final show of the opening ceremony will take place at the Trocadero Gardens.
- From the first Olympics in 1896 until 2020, the opening ceremonies have taken place inside the stadium.
- Greece will be the first to compete in the Parade of Nations, as the modern Olympic Games began in Greece in 1896.
- That is why Greece is placed first in every Olympic parade.
- The ancient Olympics were also held in Greece about 3000 years ago.

History of 26 July: On this day in 1999, the Indian Army won the Kargil war by liberating all the hill peaks including Tiger Hill, Point 4875, Point 5140 from the occupation of the Pakistani Army. We celebrate this day as Kargil Vijay Diwas. In February 1999, an agreement named ‘Lahore Declaration’ was signed between India and Pakistan, which was signed by both the countries. Despite this, in defiance of the agreement, Pakistani soldiers and terrorists infiltrated and captured India’s Line of Control (LoC) located in North Kargil of Jammu and Kashmir. Indian soldiers came to know about this infiltration in May 1999, after which the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay. This operation continued from May 1999 to July 1999. Finally, on 26 July 1999, the Indian Army succeeded in driving away the Pakistani Army and terrorists. In this way Operation Vijay was successful and the tricolor was hoisted on the peak of Kargil.
During the three-month long battle, around 490 military officers and soldiers of the country were martyred.
