Kritika Kamra Says Her Big Bollywood Debut With Karan Johar Got Shelved: ‘It Was Signed But…’ | Exclusive – News18

Kritika Kamra will next be seen in Zee5’s Gyaarah Gyaarah.

Kritika Kamra’s film debut was to be made by Meri Pyaari Bindu director. She adds it was her destiny to work with Karan Johar years later with Gyaarah Gyaarah.

Prem Ya Paheli – Chandrakanta was Kritika Kamra’s last fiction show for television, following which she transitioned to films and made her Bollywood debut with Mitron in 2018. But not many know that she was supposed to begin her Hindi film career with a project that was to be jointly produced by Karan Johar and Ektaa R Kapoor. She had earlier revealed that it was supposed to be the Hindi remake of Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair starring Reese Witherspoon and would also star Emraan Hashmi.

Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Kritika opens up on why the film, that was supposed to be directed by Meri Pyaar Bindu maker, got shelved. “If that film would have happened, it would have been my debut. It was the first film that I had signed. It was supposed to be directed by Akshay Roy. We did the prep and the readings. The schedules were all charted. But then the film didn’t happen because of some financial and business reasons,” she reveals.

Talking about how the episode made her ‘upset’, she adds, “That was the time when I had quit television and was auditioning for films. To get a Dharma launch was and is a pretty big deal. It was signed and sealed and was ready to go on floors. And when that didn’t happen, it was kind of disappointing. But looking back, I think I’m happy with the way things turned out.”

Years later, she’s now a part of Gyaarah Gyaarah, a Zee5 web series jointly produced by Karan and Guneet Monga. Stressing on how she was destined to work with Dharma Productions, she states, “Gyaarah Gyaarah is technically my first collaboration with Dharma. Things happen on their own and maybe this is how I was supposed to collaborate with them. Everything happens at the right time. I’m more prepared now than I was at that time.”

But the thriller series didn’t suddenly fall into her lap. Kritika had to audition to land the part of a cop in it. And she heaps praise on makers who have been giving opportunities to actors like her through auditions. “Props to filmmakers who cast through this process and I’ve a lot of gratitude towards them. Those who find their actors through auditions get fresh casting and what we get is the chance to do what we haven’t done before and actually get the parts we’re good,” she states.

The Kitani Mohabbat Hai actor continues, “Nobody could’ve imagined that I could play a cop or a gangster. An audition is a great way to show that you can transform into that character and convince the makers that you’re right for it. Since it’s a very democratic process, you don’t feel bad if you don’t get the part. If you aren’t fit for it, it’s fine. But when you don’t get something without even getting a shot at it, that really hurts.”

Gyaarah Gyaarah also stars Raghav Juyal and Dhairya Karwa and is set for a release on August 9.
