Veteran shuttler PV Sindhu has congratulated shooter Manu Bhaker on joining the exclusive club of Indian athletes with two Olympic medals. Manu secured her first bronze by finishing third in the women’s 10m air pistol event in Paris. The achievement also made her the first female shooter from India to win a medal at the Summer Olympics. The 22-year-old claimed her second bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event, paring up with Sarabjot Singh.
Manu is only India’s second woman athlete to bag two Olympic medals after Sindhu. The badminton star won a silver in the women’s singles event at the Rio Games in 2016 before winning bronze in the last edition in Tokyo.
Following Manu Bhaker’s second medal at the Paris Olympics, PV Sindhu penned a heartfelt note on Instagram, welcoming the young pistol shooter to the “2 Olympic Medal Club”. Sindhu posted a collage of photographs where she and Manu could be seen posing with their respective Olympic medals.
“I couldn’t find a better picture to welcome this sweet young girl into the 2 Olympic Medal Club! From defending me on social media to joining me in the club, it’s clear you’re a special talent. Manu, watching you bounce back from Tokyo 2020 has been inspiring! Godspeed, girl,” PV Sindhu wrote in the caption.
Following her Paris Olympics heroics, Manu Bhaker expressed her admiration for senior Indian athletes like Neeraj Chopra and PV Sindhu. In the interview, Manu further revealed that she once created a fake profile to take down the critics of Sindhu.
“I have always known the greats in Indian sports history. In my time, I have always known (PV) Sindhu and Neeraj (Chopra). I have always appreciated them for their hard work. There was this one time when I made a fake profile to defend Sindhu. Some haters commented and I got so triggered that I made a fake account to defend her on that,” Manu Bhaker told Sportstar.
Manu Bhaker is also the first athlete from independent India to secure two medals in a single Olympic edition. Norman Pritchard earlier achieved the feat as a British-Indian in 1900. The athlete won silver in men’s 200m sprint and 200m hurdles. Manu has an opportunity to bag another medal during her Paris campaign. She will compete in the women’s 25m pistol event on August 2.
