Sable became the first Indian to enter the final of the 3000m steeplechase event on Monday, but hopes of a medal in badminton were dashed as Sen was defeated by Malaysian Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal fixture.

A cruel day for India at the Paris Olympics ensued yet again, as the contingent missed out on two medal finishes in heartbreaking fashion.

Lakshya Sen slumped to a cruel loss against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in three exhilirating games of badminton, losing out on the Bronze medal.

The Indian shooting contingent were treated to yet another disappointing fourth place finish as the likes of Maheswari Chauhan and Ananjteet Naruka, both fell two points short of claiming another Bronze for the shooters this time around.

But, the day did end on a high, as steeplechase runner Avinash Sable scripted history, by securing qualification to the finals and becoming the first Indian man to ever qualify for the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase event in the Olympics.

Women’s Team Table Tennis Round of 16:

India beat higher-ranked Romania in the round of 16 match of the women’s table tennis competition at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday (August 5) to qualify for the quarterfinals. Star Indian paddler Manika Batra won both of her singles matches to take India to the next round after Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish Kamath suffered close defeats in their singles matches.

Women’s 400m:

India’s Kiran Pahal failed to book an automatic semifinal spot in women’s 400m after finishing seventh in her heat race at the Paris Olympics on Monday and she will now run in the repechage round. Kiran, who turned 24 on Monday, clocked 52.51 seconds which was well below her season’s and personal best of 50.92 seconds.

Mixed Team Skeet Bronze Medal Match:

Indian shooters Maheswari Chauhan and Ananjteet Naruka narrowly missed out on adding to the national medal tally as they finished the mixed skeet team event in fourth place after going down to the Chinese pair of Jiang Yiting and Lyu Jianlin.

Yiting and Jianlin pipped the Indian duo as the Chinese pair posted a score of 44 out of a possible 48, with Chauhan and Naruka a mere point behind at 43 points.

Men’s Badminton Singles Bronze Medal Match:

It just was not meant to be for Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen who fell just short of scripting history, losing out on the Bronze medal in the Men’s Singles Badminton with a tough loss to Malaysia’s Zii Jia Lee at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

Women’s 68kg Freestyle Wrestling:

India’s Nisha Dahiya endured a heartbreaking loss as the wrestler fell to North Korea’s Sol Gum Pak in the quarterfinal of the Women’s 68kg Freestyle.

Dahiya took it to the 18-year-old North Korean, and endured a seemingly crippling injury to wrestler. But, she ultimately fell to Pak 8-10 in an insane turnaround, and lost out on making it to the semifinal.

Men’s 3000m Steeplechase Heats:

Avinash Sable scripted history by becoming the first Indian man to qualify for the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris Olympics here on Monday.

Sable finished fifth in his heat with a timing of 8:15.43 minutes to qualify among the top 15 in the event. In steeplechase, there are three heats and the top five from each heat qualify for the final.

Sailing: Men’s, Women’s dinghy

Indian sailors Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan finished their respective dinghy events in places 18 and 21 respectively.

Race 9 and 10 of Saravanan’s event, originally slated to take place on Monday were cancelled as a result of inclement weather conditions, and as was Kumanan’s Race 10.

As a result, the top 10 placed sailors in each category moved into the final as the Indian challenge in the French seas came to an end.
