Court’s decision on suo moto public interest litigation This order was passed by the division bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Om Prakash Shukla after hearing the suo moto PIL filed titled ‘Protection of Defense Land at Ayodhya’. In the petition, questions were raised on the issue of construction taking place in the army exercise area and its surrounding villages.
13391 acres of land reserved for army rifle range During the hearing, the petitioner told the court that a letter was sent by the Lieutenant Colonel of Ayodhya Cantt to the District Magistrate, Ayodhya on 11 February 2023, in which about 13391 acres of land was declared protected as an army rifle range.
This land is spread over many villages in the Cantt area. A letter in this regard was sent by the District Magistrate Ayodhya to the army officers on 19 February 2024. While hearing this case, the court has called an army officer to ensure that he can help in the hearing.
