World Teachers’ Day 2024: History

World Teachers’ Day began in 1966 when the International Labor Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) held a Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris.

During this conference, the UNESCO/ ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers was established which outlined the rights and obligations of educators.

The first official celebration of World Teachers’ Day took place on October 5, 1994, to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1966 meeting. Since then, this day has become a global observance honouring the significant impact that teachers have on society.
