IPL 2025: Will Rohit Sharma Be Retained? Ex-Mumbai Indians Captain Gives Honest Opinion Ahead of Mega Auctions – News18

Former Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh believes that since Rohit recently led India to a T20 World Cup victory, the franchise will hold him back.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) retention deadline is fast approaching, and all eyes will be on Mumbai Indians as fans are concerned about former captain Rohit Sharma. The team had a major leadership alteration with Hardik Pandya returning last season and replacing Rohit as the new captain. Neither the fans welcomed this massive change, nor did the team perform well last season, finishing at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, a viral video of Rohit having a chat with former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batting coach Abhishek Nayar led to doubts over the former’s association with MI in the future.
It will be interesting to see if the franchise retains all its marquee players such as Pandya, Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. Former Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh believes that since Rohit recently led India to a T20 World Cup victory, the franchise will hold him back.
“Mumbai Indians is a team that hasn’t played well in the last two to three years. They’ve been a champion team, a very good team, and as far as I know, they will definitely think of building a team for the future. But that doesn’t mean they won’t add experienced players this year. Last year, they made Hardik Pandya captain, and I think he will definitely be retained. Jasprit Bumrah will be retained, Suryakumar Yadav will be retained, and the question looms over Rohit Sharma’s retention,” said Harbhajan, speaking exclusively to Star Sports.
“He has just won the World Cup as a captain, so I think he should be retained, and he will be. That will make four players, and if there’s a fifth player, then Tilak Varma will be retained.
“Tilak Varma is one of those players who will be very useful for Mumbai Indians in the future to win matches. When it comes to bowling, I don’t think there’s anyone else they would want to retain, so Nehal Wadhera could be a good option for them. He is an uncapped player, so he should be picked,” he added.
Rohit’s poor run in IPL 2024
Rohit Sharma wasn’t at his fluent best in IPL 2024 earlier this year. He scored 417 runs in 14 games at an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150. Though he scored a 105-run knock against the Chennai Super Kings, he overall had a very underwhelming season by his standards.
