Here’s a look at the updated list of the most expensive players of each of the 10 IPL franchises

As many as eight teams broke their previous salary records for a player in IPL history as the retention lists were revealed on Thursday evening. Since the first player retention limit was set for Rs 18 crore, teams had no option but to match that amount if they wish to keep hold of any player from the IPL 2024 squad next season as well.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Mitchell Starc (Rs 24.75 crore)

KKR signed Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. The left-arm pacer played 14 matches for the franchise and picked up 17 wickets. He won Player of The Match Awards in the Qualifier 1 and final of IPL 2024. He remains the most expensive player in IPL history as well.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Heinrich Klaasen (Rs 23 crore)

SRH is the only franchise in IPL history that has signed two players for more than Rs 20 crore. In the IPL 2024 auction, the 2016 champions signed Pat Cummins for Rs 20.50 crore, and ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions, they splashed Rs 23 crore to retain Klaasen. South African wicketkeeper-batter joined SRH in the IPL 2023 auction and scored 448 and 479 runs in the last two editions of the cash-rich league.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Virat Kohli (Rs 21 crore)

Kohli once again became RCB’s most expensive player in IPL history after he was retained for Rs 21 crore by the franchise. The 35-year-old right-handed batter has been associated with the Bengaluru-based team since the first edition of IPL and holds the record for scoring most runs and centuries in the tournament’s history.

Lucknow Super Giants: Nicholas Pooran (Rs 21 crore)

LSG retained West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran for Rs 21 crore which made him the most expensive for the Lucknow-based franchise. Pooran broke KL Rahul’s record, who joined LSG for Rs 17 crore ahead of IPL 2022 mega auctions.

Punjab Kings: Sam Curran (Rs 18.50 crore)

PBKS signed England all-rounder Curran for Rs 18.50 crore in the IPL 2023 auction after his player-of-the-tournament award winning performance at the 2022 T20 World Cup. In his second stint with PBKS, Curran played 27 matches and scored 546 runs in addition to picking up 26 wickets. He also served as captain of the franchise in 11 matches across two seasons but could only manage to win five.

Mumbai Indians: Jasprit Bumrah (Rs 18 crore)

Star Indian pacer Bumrah became the most expensive player in IPL history for the Mumbai Indians on Thursday as he was retained for Rs 18 crore by the five-time IPL champions. Before him, Australian pacer Cameron Green was MI’s most expensive player in IPL after he was signed for Rs 17.50 crore by the franchise in the IPL 2023 auction.

Gujarat Titans: Rashid Khan (Rs 18 crore)

IPL 2022 champions retained Rashid Khan for Rs 18 crore which made him the most expensive player in IPL history for the franchise. Rashid joined GT for Rs 15 crore ahead of IPL 2022 mega auctions, and in the 45 matches played so far apart from dismissing 56 batters, Rashid has scored 323 runs at a strike-rate of 184.57.

Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad (Rs 18 crore)

Ruturaj Gaikwad became CSK’s most expensive player in IPL after being retained for Rs 18 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. He broke England’s Test captain Ben Stokes record who joined the franchise for 16.25 crore in IPL 2023 auctions but only played two matches in the season due to injury-related issues.

Rajasthan Royals: Sanju Samson & Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rs 18 crore each)

Samson and Jaiswal were retained for Rs 18 crores each by the Rajasthan Royals which makes them the joint-most expensive players in IPL history for the franchise. Samson is RR’s most capped player in IPL and has also scored most runs for them, whereas Jaiswal is one of the best batters of present times and has a bright future ahead of him.

Delhi Capitals: Axar Patel (Rs 16.50 crore)

Delhi Capitals retained Indian all-rounder Axar for Rs 16.50 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions, which also helped him become the most expensive player in the tournament’s history for the franchise. Before him, Rishabh Pant and Yuvraj Singh were the joint-most expensive players (Rs 16 crore each) in IPL for the Delhi-based team.
