Kartik Aaryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Ajay Devgn starrer Singham Again clashed at the box office. Both films released on 1st November, on the occasion of Diwali.
Kartik Aaryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Ajay Devgn’s cop-actioner Singham Again locked horns at the box office this Diwali. Both films released on November 1 in theatres, and the box office clash had become a major topic of discussion ahead of the release. While both films performed well, and emerged as hits, things weren’t all pleasant between the makers before the release. In a recent conversation with Connect Cine, T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar revealed what went down behind-the-scenes in an attempt to avert the clash.
Before Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again released in theatres, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 team alleged unfair screen allocation. Speaking about the same, Bhushan Kumar said, “I didn’t go to the Competition Commission. We had a lot of arguments with the Singham Again team because they were being unfair. In all survey reports, we were equal, on that basis, we had requested the competition commission to keep the screen allocation 50-50. Since our film was equally big, we demanded equal justice. But there was some personal interest behind this favouritism, I don’t want to blame the theatre chains. Since they were the distributors of the other film, they had a few reservations. Still, they wanted to support us to a great extent. We had a lot of tug-of-war between this.”
Bhushan Kumar further said that he suggested starting the advance booking to see the response, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 ended up having a Rs 36 crore-plus opening despite a big film in competition. “We had our tussle over it, but in the end, it all got normalised. Both the films were doing very well. It got a little unpleasant, but they also assured me that they wouldn’t let my film bear losses. When they saw the result, they also helped us.”
He said that while both parties tried to avert the clash, it wasn’t possible for either films to budge on the date. Bhushan Kumar explained to Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty that he had announced Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 first and had some commitments to OTT platforms, which is why he couldn’t push the film. While Singham Again team understood this, they also had their limitations since the film’s theme was inspired by Ramayana, and thus they couldn’t miss the Diwali release.
“Both parties had their limitations, but Ajay sir was very positive about it. We both tried to avoid the clash, but the situation was unavoidable,” said Bhushan Kumar. However, he added that in the future, he believes two big films shouldn’t clash at the box office since it affects the business.
Directed by Anees Bazmee, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 stars Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles. It is bankrolled by T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios. Meanwhile, Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again stars Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Tiger Shroff, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. It is produced by Rohit Shetty Picturez, Reliance Entertainment, Jio Studios, and Devgn Films.
