Bumrah, who will lead India’s pace attack in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, needs 20 wickets to break Kapil Dev’s record of taking most Test wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah will lead Indiaโs pace attack in the five-match Test series against Australia, which starts on November 22 in Perth. The 30-year-old pacer missed the last Test series played between the two teams in 2023 due to a back injury but will be a key player in the upcoming series. Bumrah, who is expected to lead India in the series opener in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is yet to arrive in Australia, will have a chance to break the elite bowling record of Kapil Dev in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Bumrah, who has picked up 32 wickets in seven Tests played so far on Australian soil, needs 20 wickets to break Kapilโs record and become Indiaโs most successful bowler in Australia. During his playing days, Kapil played 11 Tests against the Baggy Greens in Australia and dismissed 51 batters. In the list of bowlers with most wickets in Australia, Kapil is followed by Anil Kumble (49), Ravichandran Ashwin (39) and Bishan Singh Bedi (35).

If Bumrah, who picked up 21 wickets in four matches of the 2018-19 Test series in Australia, manages to take more than 25 wickets in the next five Tests, then he will break Kapilโs record of taking most wickets by an Indian pacer in a Test series in Australia. In five matches against Australia during Indiaโs tour in 1991-92, Kapil dismissed 25 batters.
The overall record of taking most wickets in a Test series for India played on Australian soil is in the name of Bedi, who accounted for the dismissal of 31 Oz batters in five Tests played during the India tour in 1977-78. In that same series, his long-time spin bowling partner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar dismissed 28 batters, but despite that, India went on to lose the series with a score line of 3-2.
