Mallika Sherawat, who made her big screen comeback with Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video alongside Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri, recently revealed why she gave up her part in Netflix’s much anticipated romantic comedy The Royals. Mallika revealed that she was being offered the role of Ishaan Khatter’s on-screen mother in the show. After she declined, television actress Sakshi Tanwar was roped in for the part.
Highlighting the reason for declining the role, Mallika said, “I was promised something and what translated looked very lame to me on paper. I felt cheated and let down, So, then I didn’t want to be a part of that,” during a conversation with Entertainment Times.
Earlier, her team had told Etimes that Mallika left The Royals in February owing to creative differences with the show’s producers. The role offered was much different from what had been initially promised. After several unsuccessful discussions, Mallika decided to leave the project.
The Royals features a star-studded cast including Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar, Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Chunky Panday, Dino Morea, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra and Luke Kenny, among others.
Mallika, who impressed fans with her role in the hilarious comedy films such as Welcome, alongside Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor, and Dhamaal, shared that she feels underutilised in the comedy genre and expressed her desire to be a part of more comedy films. Mallika said, “People still have not tapped my potential. I want the industry to use my comic timing, and my potential in more comedies because I enjoy doing comedy.”
Towards the end, the actress noted that reuniting with Mahesh Bhatt would be a ‘dream’ for her. “He has brought up an idea, we are working on it and hopefully it will all turn into a film soon,” she confirmed. Mallika worked with Mahesh Bhatt during the romantic thriller Murder where she shared the screen with Emraan Hashmi.
Before Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, the 47-year-old actress was last seen in RK/RKay (2022), directed by Rajat Kapoor. Mallika, who made a splash with her debut film Khwahish has been a part of many successful films such as Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Murder and Dhamaal.
