Mamata Calls For UN Peacekeeping Force In Bangladesh, BJP Says CM Shedding ‘Crocodile Tears’ – News18
Last Updated:
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s remark came days after Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested and charged with sedition in Bangladesh.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday called for the deployment of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Bangladesh and sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to assure the safety and security of the religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
Banerjee’s remark came days after Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested and charged with sedition in Bangladesh, with several reports claiming that two monks who had gone to give him medicines in jail were also arrested on Friday.
Addressing the West Bengal Assembly’s winter session, Banerjee said, “The Government of India can take this matter up with the United Nations. So a peacekeeping force can be sent to Bangladesh.”
“We have families… properties… and loved ones in Bangladesh. We accept whatever stance the Government of India takes on this…but we condemn atrocities on religious grounds anywhere in the world and appeal to the union government, and the Prime Minister, to intervene,” she said.
Banerjee further claimed that she had spoken with the chief of the ISKCON’s Kolkata unit and extended her support, saying “We will not tolerate if Indians are attacked in Bangladesh.”
‘Mamata Should Stop Shedding Crocodile Tears’: BJP
The BJP attacked Mamata over her stance for Hindus in Bangladesh calling it “crocodile tears”. The party alleged that she herself had targeted the Hindu religious organisations to “consolidate her Muslim vote bank”.
“Mamata Banerjee should stop shedding crocodile tears for Hindus in Bangladesh…Not too long ago she had personally targeted monks and Hindu religious organisations like the Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha and ISKCON in West Bengal, to consolidate her Muslim vote bank. Thousands of saffron-clad sadhus and lakhs of Hindu devotees had hit the streets in Kolkata, in protest,” Amit Malviya posted on X.
“She is vile and a Hindu-hating hypocrite. West Bengal needs to get rid of her to save itself from meeting the same fate as Hindus of Bangladesh,” he added.
Mamata Backs Centre
The arrest of Hindu monks and reports confirming attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh triggered sharp reactions from Indian leaders, who have condemned the incident and called for intervention from the PM Modi-led government.
On Thursday, Banerjee said that her government will back the centre on the issues involving attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh, reported news agency ANI.
“We do not want any religion to be harmed. I have spoken to ISKCON here. Since this concerns another country, the Central government must take relevant action. We stand with them on this issue,” she said.
“Bangladesh is a different country. The government of India will look into it. It does not come under our jurisdiction. We are not supposed to talk about it or interfere. While we feel sorry inside, we follow the policies set by the Centre,” news agency PTI quoted Mamata Banerjee as saying.
Earlier, the Ministry of Externa Affairs condemned the arrest and denial of bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and urged the Bangladesh government to ensure the safety and security of Hindus, a religious minority in the country.
