One Nation, One Election Bill in Lok Sabha Today, Parliament Winter Session Live Updates: Simultaneous polls could become a reality in India as the BJP-led central government is set to table the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in Lok Sabha today, December 17.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will present before the house two landmark bills, including the ONOP Bill, officially titled The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.
The ONOP Bill aims to synchronise the tenures of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections, while the other bill proposes similar amendments for Delhi and other Union Territory Assemblies, according to a government statement.
ONOP has been a long-standing poll promise of the BJP-led NDA, which is expected to take shape and come into effect in the coming years. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is likely to refer the newly-tabled bills to a Joint Committee of Parliament for wider consultations, said sources.
Meanwhile, the opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and MK Stalin have opposed the idea of simultaneous polls, calling the bill a move towards making of “authoritarian democracy.”

Ahead of the introduction of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill in the Lok Sabha, several parties have made their stance clear on simultaneous polls.
The BJP and its allies, including TDP, RJD and Shiv Sena, are in support of the Bill, while several Opposition parties, including Congress, TMC and MK Stalin’s DMK have opposed it.
While a total of 32 political parties are supporting the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, 15 others are opposing it, according to highly-placed sources.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ policy proposes a simultaneous election process to hold the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections together. Currently, polls are held at different times for central government and states.
Once enforced, the voters would be able to cast their votes for both levels of the government on the same day, reducing the high election cost and frequency of polls in the country.
A panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind suggested that in the first stage, only Lok Sabha and Assembly elections be held together. In the second stage of its implementation, elections to municipalities and panchayats will be synchronised with Lok Sabha and Assemblies.

The idea of holding simultaneous polls is not new to India as the practice was followed nationwide till 1967. The model was discontinued after several state Assemblies were dissolved prematurely between 1968-69, leading to different poll cycles in those states.
In fact, the Lok Sabha was dissolved a year ahead of the scheduled time in 1970 and mid-tenure elections were held next year. Since then, the ONOP model has been discontinued in India.
