In a shocking turn of events, a Chinese man, who had been eagerly preparing for his wedding, found himself at the centre of a devastating scam when he discovered the truth about the woman he was about to marry. The man, who had already spent a staggering Rs 55 lakh on his to-be wife, was left reeling after he uncovered her deception.
According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the incident began Shin, from Hubei province, came across an advertisement for wedding planning services. There, he met a woman named Shaoyu. The two quickly struck up a connection and started communicating regularly, eventually developing a romantic relationship online.
However, the relationship soon took a financially draining turn. Shaoyu, claiming it was a customary practice, asked Shin for Rs 22 lakh as a “bride price,” which was a traditional custom in some parts of China. She also requested additional money for gifts for her sister and medical expenses for her mother.
As Shin grew suspicious, the woman managed to reassure him by sending pictures and engaging in phone conversations. Over the course of a year, Shin transferred more than Rs 55 lakh to Shaoyu.
After months of online interaction and mounting financial transactions, Shin and Shaoyu’s families agreed to meet in person. When they finally met, Shin was taken aback by the woman who claimed to be Shaoyu. She appeared different from the photos he had seen, and when asked about it, she explained that the images were altered with a filter.
Despite this unsettling revelation, Shin decided to move forward with the wedding plans, continuing to send money. However, his suspicions were further aroused when he noticed some unusual messages on the girl’s phone. When he tried to confront her, she claimed that her phone had been hacked, offering no further explanation.
The entire situation took a dramatic turn when a woman, pretending to be Shaoyu’s sister, contacted Shin to discuss ending the relationship. It was then that Shin decided to conduct an investigation. His efforts soon uncovered the shocking truth: the woman who had been posing as Shaoyu’s sister was, in fact, the same woman who had been deceiving him all along.
The revelation was even more stunning when Shin discovered that Shaoyu and her entire family were involved in the scam. The woman, along with a network of hired actors, had orchestrated the entire fraud to extort money from Shin. Further investigation revealed that Shaoyu, the woman behind the deceit, was already married and had a child. She had been using the pretence of a wedding scam to support her family financially.
After realising he had been the victim of a large-scale con, a distraught Shin immediately reported the matter to the local police who later confirmed that the woman and her accomplices were part of a well-organised criminal ring targetting unsuspecting individuals seeking love and marriage online.
