Death toll reached to two

The death toll in the Mohali building collapse climbed to two with the body of a 29-year-old man recovered from under the rubble on Sunday.

He was identified as Abhishek Dhanwal from Ambala.

Earlier in the day, Abhishek’s father told reporters at the site that his son, who used to visit a gym in the building, was missing and his phone was not reachable. Abhishek worked in the IT sector and used to live in a nearby area, his father said.

Earlier on Saturday, a 20-year-old woman died in the incident. The woman hailing from Himachal Pradesh, died after she was pulled out of the debris of the building. She was rescued from the rubble in a critical condition and was rushed to a hospital, but she succumbed to injuries.

The multi-storey building collapsed on Saturday evening, leaving at least five people trapped. The district authorities launched a rescue operation. Two excavators were pressed into service as part of the operation. A fire brigade team was also present.

A National Disaster Response Team (NDRF) team, too, reached the spot. The fire brigade also participated in the operation, officials said.

Prompt action by Indian Army

Indian Army responded swiftly to rescue persons trapped in the tragic collapse of the four-storey building at Mohali. An Engineer Task Force of 80 Army personnel along with earthmoving equipment have been working overnight and are continuing efforts to look for survivors.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “Sad news has been received that a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) has collapsed. The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed at the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration.” Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, among others, also reached the spot.

Preliminary information suggested that the building collapsed after a basement was dug in a nearby area. A case for culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been filed against the owners of the building – Parwinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh.
