Amitabh Bachchan pays an emotional tribute to Shyam Benegal. The legendary director passed away on Monday, at the age of 90.
Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan mourned Shyam Benegal’s death. The legendary filmmaker, who is considered the pioneer of Parallel Cinema in India, died on Monday, December 23. He was 90 years old. Following his death, Big B took to X and his blog to offer his condolences.
“T 5233 – We have lost another stalwart of the Film Industry today.. Shyam Benegal passes away.. Prayers and condolences,” Amitabh wrote on X. Check out his post below:

Several Bollywood stars joined Amitabh Bachchan to remember Shyam Benegal. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared a heartfelt eulogy along with a photo of the late director. “Go well Shyam babu. Thank you for inspiring many like me. Thank you for the cinema. Thank you for giving tough stories and flawed characters such amazing dignity. Truly among the last of our greats,” he expressed.
Akshay Kumar also paid tribute, writing, “Pained to know of Shyam Benegal ji’s demise. One of the finest filmmakers in our country, truly a legend. Om Shanti 🙏.”
Sudhir Mishra reflected on the unique emotional depth of Benegal’s films, writing, “Much will be written about Shyam Benegal but for me, not many talk about the fact that there was a lament in his films and a sadness about the fact we were not living in the best of all possible worlds. If there is one thing Shyam Benegal expressed best: it was the poetry of the ordinary face and ordinary lives.”

Shyam Benegal’s career spanned over five decades, cementing his position as a pioneering filmmaker in Indian cinema. He made his debut with the 1974 movie Ankur. He went on to deliver memorable movies such as “Nishant” (1975), “Manthan” (1976), “Bhumika” (1977), “Mandi” (1983), “Trikaal” (1985), and “Sardari Begum” (1996). His last release was Mujib: The Making of a Nation, which hit theatres in 2023.
