Good Governance Day 2024: December 25, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is observed as Good Governance Day. The country honours Vajpayee’s leadership and services to society on this day.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was renowned for his oratory skills. As India’s prime minister, Vajpayee held the position thrice: 13 days in 1996, 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and then a full term from 1999 to 2004.

Good Governance Day 2024: History

On December 23, 2014, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were honoured with the Bharat Ratna.

The Narendra Modi government also announced that December 25 would henceforth be observed as Good Governance Day in honour of Vajpayee’s legacy.

Since 2014, the government has observed Good Governance Day annually. The purpose of the celebration is to ensure that citizens of the country receive equitable treatment from the government and benefit from a range of government services.

Good Governance Day 2024: Significance

The purpose of the day is to inform the public about the obligations and functions of the government. By fostering active engagement from both sides, it seeks to close the divide between the public and the government.

Good Governance Day 2024: How It Is Celebrated?

The Good Governance Week (Sushasan Saptah) festivities began on December 19, according to the official website. On December 25, the week-long celebration will come to a close.

In 2021, during Amrit Mahotsav (the 75th Year of Independence), the government decided to observe Good Governance Week (Sushasan Saptah). It was intended to introduce the idea of “good governance” to the entire system by passing it down from the districts to the villages.

Throughout the week-long festivities, several initiatives are undertaken to show the government’s dedication to offering the citizens of this nation accountable, transparent, and efficient governance. The goal of the fourth Sushasan Saptah is to promote good governance throughout India.
