Babar Azam on Thursday joined Virat and Rohit in an elite list by becoming the third player to score 4000 runs in all three formats of the game.
Babar Azam joined legendary Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in an elite list on Thursday, December 26, by becoming only the third player in the world to score 4000 runs each in all three formats of the game. Babar achieved the feat during Day 1’s play of the ongoing first South Africa-Pakistan Test match, which got underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday. The 30-year-old right-handed batter, who was making a comeback into the Test team after being ignored for the last two Tests against England in October earlier this year, came out to bat at No. 3 for the Shan Masood-led side but could only manage to score 4 runs from 11 balls.
However, those four runs were enough for him to cross the 4000-run mark in Test cricket and join Kohli and Rohit in the special club.
Babar, who served as Pakistan’s captain in all three formats of the game in the past, has 4001, 5957, and 4223 runs to his name in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, respectively.
Kohli was the first batter in the world to score 4000 runs in all three formats of the game. He achieved the feat during the India-England T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal match played in Adelaide on November 10, 2022.
The 36-year-old right-handed batter from India, who is playing in the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground these days, has 9166, 13906, and 4188 runs to his name in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, respectively.
India’s current Test and ODI captain, Rohit, joined Kohli in the elite club in June 2024 when he completed 4000 T20I runs during the India-Ireland T20 World Cup 2024 match played in New York. The right-handed batter has 4289 Test, 10866 ODI, and 4231 T20I runs to his name.
Pakistan all out for 211 in 57.3 overs
South African captain Temba Bavuma invited Pakistan to bat first in the Boxing Day Test at SuperSport Park, and his decision turned out to be a masterstroke after debutant Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson picked up 4 and 5 wickets, respectively, to dismiss the visitors for 211 runs in 57.3 overs. For Pakistan, No. 4 batter Kamran Ghulam top-scored by making 54 runs from 71 balls.
